I really enjoyed Professor Hardinger's class. The lecture was at either 8am or 9am so I almost never went, except to pick up my exams, but because he was such a well experienced lecturer, the Bruincasts were not a problem to watch each night. I've had some professors where I fall asleep in lecture, then come back and watch Bruincast and fall asleep again.
Hardinger loves his little jokes and metaphors about his grandkids and twitter and they'll make you slap your forehead, but in the end they actually help! His tests are very fair, but it's easy to miss little points here and there. Do his practice midterms and finals, they end up teaching you a lot more than you originally thought you knew. He definitely provides the students with the materials to succeed, but you must keep up. He goes through the material at a very fast pace. I highly recommend Hardinger, because you're not going to find an easy OChem professor, but Hardinger is definitely most effective
I had Hardinger for Chem 14C and 14D. I received an A in 14C and an A- in 14D.
Hardinger is amazing. I did not truly realize how amazing he is until he was no longer my teacher. He is a great lecturer and no matter how stupid all his metaphors may sound, they actually can help. He definitely tries to make the concepts as simple and easy as possible. And of course he is very organized and provides so much material to help you study. What worked for me was just doing the Practice Problems and CFQs and of course doing the previous midterms/finals. Those are so key! Probably the only thing you really need to study for either course. Oh and you definitely don't need the textbook- I never bought it. The discussion board is also very helpful and easy EC points. Basically, I loved Ochem with Hardinger and if you can take him!!!
You will get an A in this class (14C or 14D) if you just PUT IN THE TIME. Do the practice problems, OWLS, practice exams, etc. and you will be more than prepared. His exams are simply slight variations of previous ones he posts on the class website, so take advantage of them! I slacked off in this class, never did the practice problems, and was constantly behind on material and lectures (easy to do as his lectures are video/podcast). I did all of the practice exams in the 2 days before each test and ended up with a B+. Pretty fair teacher and not a difficult class at all if you make the effort.
I personally did not like Professor Hardinger. He is a good lecturer and you learn the material. His thinkbook is very valuable, no reason to even buy the textbook. Everything you need to know is there in the thinkbook. If you do all of the practice midterms and final exams you will do decent on the tests. He does not try to surprise you with anything you do not see in his thinkbook or lecture. However, I did not like his personality. In office hours he makes you fell stupid. I did not think he was a very approachable guy at all. He is not very nice and attempts to make too many jokes about drugs and sex in class. His jokes are NOT funny, but I guess at least he tries. Anyways, I would suggest taking Hardinger, it is nothing unexpected but a good grade will not come without hard work in his class. Just do not expect him to help you out very much. Do the work and make sure you understand everything and you will be fine, but class is definitely boring.
Probably the best science professor I've had at UCLA. He writes his own "thinkbook" which he uses to assign problem sets. It is by far the best text book I've used. Lectures were straight forward and simple enough that you walked away feeling ready to tackle the problem sets assigned. Do all the problem sets and the old midterms which he posts on his web site, and you'll likely end up with an A.
Got an A in the class with A LOT OF HARD WORK. but it was fun and sooo worth it. he's very organized in the way that he presents material and provides so many practice exams. he's fun to talk too so go to office hours..I LOVED HIM AND THIS CLASS. i feel like the things i learned in his class are things i won't forget for a while. his exams take thinking and are tricky but can be done.
Hardest Class I had last quarter. Also the best professor I had last quarter. Professor H is an amazing teacher. His notes/ slides are well organized, and he is extremely concerned about his students' learning.
First of all, this is a mandatory pre-health class, so there's no avoiding the subject. But Professor H does get rid of a lot of the competition between students by cutting the curve and grading on a 15pt scale instead. (85% for an A- instead of 90%)He also gives extra credit for helping each other in the discussion boards. (Up to 10 pts)
The grading scale is 25% each midterm, 50% final. No homework grade. The tests are definitely hard, and last minute studying will not help in this class. Do study as often as possible, and do every last practice problems. Make sure you know exactly why the answer is the way it is, not SORT OF why the answer is what it is. But if you mess up on the first midterm, don't panic; you can still make up for it with extra credit and the final. You'll just have to study over break and memorized all the tiny details. It is do-able though; I got a 68 on my first midterm (C+) and I still ended up with an A- in the class.
Side note: buy that model kit. u can bring in a few pre-made molecules to the exams and they really do help you get those few R/S points.
Hardinger is one of my favorite teachers at UCLA. His lectures are well organized and informative. For the first time at UCLA, I actually learned chemistry from going to lecture. The tests are pretty fair but to be well prepared, make sure you do all the Thinkbook problems and re-read the lecture slides. The Thinkbook solutions have alot of details that aren't in the lecture supplement so its really important to do those problems. Overall, the class was great and I'm really looking forward to 14D.
Syllabus: Midterm 1 25%, Midterm 2 25%, Final 50%
Lectures: His lectures are fantastically organized. He usually tells jokes in class and they are funny most of the time. (Sometimes, it seems like he's trying too hard to make us laugh and there are funny moments when he just gives up and says "Not working? Okay, well, I tried.") In any case, his lectures are really clear as well, and he is willing to stop and answer student questions as they come up. Fantastic lecturer, hands down, really easy to listen to and lectures are generally not dry at all - if you are paying attention, you will understand the concepts he is explaining.
Website/Discussion Board: Hardinger has set up this really detailed class website (Google search: Hardinger 14C) that has a lot of nice tips and additional study tools for various course topics like spectroscopy, etc. It's a really nice tool and it was just cool that he spent so much time setting up something like that. Also, he sets up this discussion board forum where you can post questions to other students and the professor himself and other people (including Hardinger) will answer them. It's a nice study tool - he encourages people study together and he does not have a curve, which brings me to my next point.
Exams: Hardinger has taught organic chemistry for a long time, so he knows where the curves will be set. As a result, he does not have a curve and his averages still end up in the 70s for each exam. Also, each exam is set such that you have 100-95 A+, 95-90 A, 90-85 A-, and so on in intervals of 5. If you study for the exam and really know everything, then you will probably score in the A to high B range. But I will admit that his exams are quite challenging at times and while most the questions are fair, there are usually one or two per exam that asks a really detailed question which you must have really memorized the lecture slides to answer correctly. But 95% of the points can be gotten on an exam as long as you do all of the homework problems (which are not turned but only for your benefit). He also has a bunch of past practice exams on his website you can study with.
Overall: His exams can be challenging unless you really know your stuff, but overall he is a fantastic professor, and come on, let's get real: if you are a life science major, Dr. H is really your only option for an ochem professor anyways.
