I have an absolutely brand new vollhart hardcover textbook and answer key book and I'm selling it for $85. yeah guys, that's 30% of the original $290 brand new price. Help me get rid of it!

As a recent grad I 've been doing a lot of reflecting on my time at UCLA lately, and it is clear to me that one of my favorite professors here (my favorite science professor for sure) was Dr. Hardinger. I took 14C and 14D with him. Before these classes I thought I was a lost cause at chemistry, but now I'm happy to say that o-chem is one of my favorite subjects thanks to this man. There is no reason for anyone to do poorly in his classes as long as you purchase his lecture supplements and thinkbooks and take the practices midterms and finals on his website. You do those things, show up to lectures, and go to office hours every so often, and Bob's your uncle! You're destined for that A. He also brings his sense of humor to class and shares jokes that are funny because they're not funny if you get what I mean. All in all, if you have a chance to take 14C and/or 14D with Hardinger, do it!

Grade distribution:
Midterm 1 - 100 points
Midterm 2 - 100 points
Final - 200 points

Professor Hardinger:
I really liked the lecture supplement and lecture slides that Hardinger made. I thought they were really well organized and had useful, yet a bit excessive information. You only really need the lecture supplement. You can get the model kit and the thinkbook if you really want extra practice, but it's really not essential for you to get a good grade in this class. He even gives extra credit points for posting on the discussion board on his website (he doesn't use CCLE), but even without extra credit I got an A. The best way to study for this class is to really make sure you know the lecture supplement contents and go over as many past exams as you can (even those earlier than the five he posts on his website). His lectures are okay. A bit boring, but useful. He makes a lot of stupid and unfunny jokes. But every once in a while there's an actual funny one. You really don't need to go to lecture because it's video podcasted. I've never been to his office hours, though I heard that he's extremely pro-model kits. I always watched each podcast twice just to get the material down. He's a fair grader (85% and above is A). Overall, I would suggest Hardinger for 14C.

TA Kyle Tamshen:
I only went to one discussion section. Sections are basically just going over thinkbook questions. And since I didn't buy a thinkbook, I never bought it so I never returned. I'm not sure how good he is as a TA, but I got bored in section and left a little early.

PLF David Ho:
My PLF for AAP was literally a godsend. If you're in AAP, I highly recommend doing peer learning, especially with David if you can. And if you're not in AAP, join AAP and do peer learning. It is honestly so helpful. David really helped solidify my understanding of the concepts of the course. Highly recommend. Going to session is more useful than going to section and using the thinkbook, to be honest.

Midterm 1 Grade: 87/100 (class average 73.8/100)
I felt like the midterm was very fair. I made a lot of stupid mistakes which is why I didn't get a higher score. Resonance was also a struggle for me. Picking up my midterm was basically the only reason why I came to class. You can bring your model kit to your midterm, but definitely not necessary to.

Midterm 2 Grade: 97/100 (class average 80.9/100)
This midterm was so much easier than the first one. This was all about spectroscopy, and the big spectroscopy problem at the end of every second midterm counts for about a third of the points for the midterm. If you're really sound on those problems and are good with assembling the pieces you get from your analysis, you should do really well. I really love the big spectroscopy problem, so I did well on this midterm. It's also non-cumulative, so only the material covered after the first midterm was tested on.

Final Grade: probably a high A (class averages 75.4/100 for Part A and 78.0/100 for Part B)
For the final, you get two hours since it's the same length as the midterms. It's out of 100 again, but he doubles your score to be out of 200 points. You can choose to either than the cumulative or noncumulative version, Parts A and B, respectively. You might think that going with Part A would be an easy choice, but you really should choose which test to take based on your strengths. you get both parts on the day of the final, but you only pick one to be graded. You should decide far ahead of time which one you will take so you can study accordingly. For me, I was very confident in the past material, and the big spectroscopy problem is guaranteed to be in the final. Since that's worth about a third of the points, you can get away with knowing a little bit of everything. If you take the noncumulative final, you need to know literally everything about the material after the second midterm, which is literally straight memorization and no conceptual thinking. Just make the decision that is best for you. haven't seen my score yet, but I know I did really well. Literally right after the end of every exam, Hardinger posts the answer key on his website. So if you're brave, you can have an idea for how you did.

Overall Grade: A
Overall the class was pretty fair. Not too hard and not too easy. Hardinger is a good pick if you want to get a good grade for 14C.

His tests are not easy but very doable. Make a good use of his website, especially those past exams he posted. Yes, Ochem is hard, but you will eventually figure out a way to master it, and I think Hardinger makes it easier for you.
