I thought professor Hardinger was the best teacher I've had so far at UCLA. He makes o-chem very easy to understand and his Thinkbook is an amazing tool. This doesn't mean that the material is easy, you have to do LOTS AND LOTS OF PROBLEMS. Thanks to professor Hardinger though it becomes so much easier to master things. Oh and during lecture, give the poor guy a break he's trying to make the lecture as enjoyable as possible.
Challenging class but there is no better teacher for the subject than Hardinger. He expects you to know the material, but which professor doesn't? His Thinkbook is very usefull and helpful. Tests are challenging but very doable with 2 hours now allotted. Hardinger makes organic chemistry understandable, what more can you ask. My experiences with regrades have been successful from obvious mistakes but he is still reluctant to give extra points to nagging nit picky students. Attend lecture and discussion everyday and you will do fine.
WHAT A PIECE OF WORK!!!!! wow... by far the worst teacher at UCLA. He tries to give you hope here and there but them screws you when it comes down to it. I asked him if my way of doing NMR was ok and he says its awesome but one again he F***s you. PIECE OF WORK.
Very apporachable, answers e-mails, VOH questions like 5 times a day. Always willing to help if you're willing to learn. Entertaining lecturer, but he really only covers the basic ideas in lecture. The thinkbook is your best friend. If you really know how to do all the PPs and CFQs as well as how to do all the problems from the practice midterms, you shouldn't have any trouble with his exams.
Hardinger makes it easy to learn chem- just go to lecture, skim the chapter, and do the CFQs and PPs. Don't worry about the text problems and the OWLs problems too much. It is difficult to find a good TA for this class so visit office hours. Finally- to study for the final, just do the CFQs and PP's over again and do the last few practice exams- they don't change much from year to year. The best part of this class is knowing how to study for it- no guessing around or studying the wrong material. I got As on both midterms and just took the final, which was pretty straightforward. Good luck!
I learned more from Dr. H in 14C than in any other chem class. He sums up the material in lecture but to get a good grade its on you to spend hours with your thinkbook. The good news is you can do well in the class without ever reading Bruice. His tests are kind of rough and you have limited time to finish the two midterms. Overall I did fine....Just watch out for his favorite test questions like "By changing no more than one atom, make this structure......" He's a great professor - but plan on doing a lot of work.
Dr. Hardinger is one of the professors at this school who transcends the title of professor to become a true teacher. He has energy and passion for teaching his subject that I have not seen equaled at this school. He puts so much energy and work into his classes. He has passion for ochem and for teaching, which I found he passed on to his students. I did not really like gchem, but I find ochem challenging yet interesting. His Thinkbook, his website, and all of his other tutorials and OWLS problems are all excellent learning materials. I never even had to read the Bruice book. Sure the jokes are corny and repetitive, but overall I found Dr. H to be pretty funny. He was always friendly in office hours and always eager to answer questions. To do well in his class, I found the practice exams on his website particularly helpful. With all the materials available, I always fet prepared for his exams. Also, studying the Thinkbook a little at a time (45-60 min a day) really helped me to truly understand the subject. Overall, Dr. H was an exceptional professor. Take him if you get the chance.
Hardinger is probably the best chem professor I've had at UCLA so far. He's very understanding..his jokes are a lil corny but they're entertaining. His exams arent that bad at all...if you do the CFQs, practice problems and OWLS and understand them then you should do fine. You dont even really need to read the book but just as long as you understand his CFQs and Practice Problems you'll do fine in the class...believe me. Overall I would recommend taking his class...he's a pretty good guy.
DrH is a good lecturer and his CFQ's really let you understand all the theory behind organic chemistry. Just understand those and you'll do fine, seriously, memorize the definitions and understand the explanations. Maybe he's not so in-depth for people who love O-chem, but seriously, how many of us in the 14 series love O-chem? take him if you can.
