This poor guy really shouldn't be teaching-- he should be hanging in a diagnostics lab with the nerds/crazies that may, though doubtfully, understand him. He really is extremely intelligent and knows his material. There's just kind of an Asperger-like disconnect between what is taught and those ridiculous tests, which were more like subjective psychological tests rather than objective information based on the entire textbook I read for them. I really did learn a lot in attending and in reading the book, but it obviously did not show. Unless he shifts the curve in my favor, I think I made a D in the class--- and let me tell you, I'm a genius when it comes to this stuff and consider myself a really good test taker. Seriously, though, what a joke. Glad he's moving outta there. Look out fellow rivals, USC, he's a little out-of-touch with, quite possibly, reality.
Dr. Lopez was a fantastic professor! He's definitely one of my favorites. The lectures are very interesting and his sense of humor helps as well. There's a lot of reading involved but the text is easy and interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone!!
Lopez, was one of the best professors I have had for a psychology course. His sense of humor adds a unique perspective to the class and makes the material appealing. His tests are average. As long as you read the book on time and go to lecture you should do fine. If you are one of those people that cram for tests, chances are you will not do well on his test. The book is densely packed with a lot of information, and the chapters are extremely long. If you wait untill the day of the midterm/final, count on staying up late.
Professor Lopez is funny guy who definately tries to make lectures entertaining as well as worthwhile. He definitely stresses his area of expertise in his lectures, as well as incorporates models (music, slides of paintings) to convey the material. There are 3 midterms and you definitely need to read the book because he has questions both from the readings and lectures. His lecture outlines really helped to follow his discussions. Take one of his classes before you graduate....good luck
I took his Psych 127 class. Basically your grade is based on 3 exams, of which consists of multiple choice problems. For all those that complain that they were hard, they just didn't read the book. The questions are not that hard. In addition, notice the whiners are always the North Campers who slacked on the studying. Lopez is a good teacher.
Lopez is a very nice and caring teacher, and it seems like an easy class, but it really isn't. The tests are very tricky and when you think they are easy, you didn't do that great after all. The class was OK overall and I would recommend him overall.
Prof. Lopez's 127 class is great if interested in the field of abnormal psychology. I was taking this class to satisfy a major elective requirement for a life-science major.
The GOOD: He hands out lecture notes prior to the class which REALLY helps with note-taking. He is always available during his office hours (except after tests) to help the student. Dr. Lopez also asked students if they wanted him to show up to class a 1/2 hour before it was to begin to help those who had questions (since the lecture hall was empty before our class). He is a decent grader when it came to tests (3 tests, final is NOT cumulative, 45 or so questions, mult-choice scantron). BTW, I earned a "mid-B" at 82%, the cutoffs for A = Top 20%, B = Next 30%, C = Next 40%.
Also, there were some questions that just were not fair or the answer could have been 2 of the choices... so he did not count the unfair questions and added points to those questions where there could have been 2 right answers... how many profs would do that???
The BAD: He doesn't usually finish what his in-class lecture notes cover because he gets so caught up in a particular area that he spends a lot of class time on it, and leaves the rest to be desired. His exams are quite detailed, so you must attend ALL his lectures and read the book carefully since questions come from both sources.
The UGLY: nothing really
Overall... great prof. Would take again, but this time read the book more than once!
