Prof. Frank was the first prof. that I had at UCLA. His lectures were slow, boring, pre-written, and included dry jokes with no correlation to the course. Certain people in the class would not be quiet in the front row, disrupting all of our learning and the prof. would not do anything about it. Perhaps he is better teaching upper division courses... but I do not recommend taking any of his lower division courses. I could not stay awake for a single lecture. If all the history professors are like this at UCLA, I may seriously consider switching majors.

I had him for a fiat lux about the Romanov's, and he is by far the worst professor I have ever had. I would do anything to avoid ever having him again. I am a very conscientious student; I don't rate a professor badly just because he demands a lot of his students. Frank literally insulted us, and when we weren't jumping to answer his belligerent questions he yelled at us for not doing the reading (which was 50 pgs for a fiat lux) and kicked us all out (although we actually had done all the reading). I dropped the class after the 4th week, and everyone I know who stayed in regrets it, as he is failing almost everyone in the class and still insults them, while the readings are now 100 pgs a week. For a fiat lux. Rude, demanding while assuming the worst of all his students, and not even teaching anything in our fiat lux, I urge everyone who sees his name on a class listing to RUN AWAY. seriously.

Spring 2017 - The professor does not take role, although the syllabus states. The syllabus did not match course material or organization. The slides were simply pictures, rather than any text to gain concrete understandings. The professor would ramble on about nothing important to what is required to know. There was never any information of what is required to know and understand in order to succeed on the midterm. The final paper was assigned 1 week before it was due during finals week. The paper was 10 pages and had to use course readings, which were by far the most ive ever been assigned. The readings hardly adhered to what is required on the final paper and midterm exam. The midterm was simply terms, which he still graded very harshly. The professor has 0 organization and no understanding on a proper way to instruct to engage students into understanding course material to be successful on his work.

why, as an econ major, i chose to take this class i don't know, what i do know is that this class was the bane of my existence. As a lecturer, he is not horrible, but his lectures were. The material is undeniably boring, consisting mainly of agricultural, social and industrial revolution. The material is rather dry, and he makes no effort to inspire interest. The readings are excessive, and you're tested solely on whether you have completed and are able to memorize all of them. His sense of humor does not actually result in humor, but annoyance as he desperately and persistantly tries to make lame jokes. His idea of funny is interupting the lecture to point out a girl in the class who had a bandage on her chin, asking "What's on your face?" The material covered is boring, he is a harsh grader and does little when students seek him for help. Avoid him.

Fall 2021 - First off, it needs to be said that even when I didn't want to, I enjoyed Professor Frank's class. In terms of the workload, it's pretty light. He used to give a multiple choice exam along with an in class essay for the midterm and the final before COVID, but now it's just a take home essay for both. There's also an "extra credit" segment where you can write reflections on assigned readings that I would recommend doing, because while they don't add to your grade in a traditional EC way, they're easy points that take away the weight of the midterm and final on your grade and also give you a rather clear study guide for the essays (which are based off of said readings and the lecture). Professor Frank can be a bit vague in terms of what he expects for papers or assignments, but if you go up to him and actually ask him directly about what you're confused on, he'll go into even further detail. He appreciates students who put a concerted effort into assignments instead of just depending on what they're given, so you have to advocate for yourself in this class. Also, his jokes about Russian history definitely tend to lighten the mood, which is nice. Just show up, care, and let him know that you take the class seriously and it's somewhat of a breeze.

If you want to pull your hair out and cry for a quarter, take his class. He's the worst professor in the world! The workload is enormous! You're reading about 200 pages a week. His lectures can be interesting, but your hand will hurt by the end of class trying to keep up with him. He has office hours, but he won't reaturn emails even when he says he will. He seems approachable, even nice in person, but he doesn't care about his students. I think he's super jaded and although he knows a lot about Russia, he really needs to get out of teaching.
