I took this as a GE credit, however, I found the rigor and material of the course to be one of the higher difficulty GEs I have taken. Prof. Tutino does have class slides, however there is minimal writing on them, so it is super important to attend every lecture. At the beginning of the course she does mention that she does not give out extensions carelessly, however, when there is an extenuating circumstance she was very considerate and was willing to offer an extension. Not only are the lecture sections important, I found that the TA sections were even more helpful as the TAs tend to go more into depth and clarify some tricky subjects mentioned briefly in lecture. This is also a class in which the "required readings" are definitely required for success, and especially the class textbook as a preparation for lectures. While this was not a exceptionally intriguing topic for me personally, Prof. Tutino does a great job of keeping her lectures engaging and interesting. I recommend this class, but if you are looking to take an low-effort GE, I would not enroll in this class.

The professor is engaging in her lectures and held extremely helpful office hours where, even with a line down the hallway, she would take the time to go through your essays. Her feedback was blunt but helpful and she did genuinely seem to care to help and about the wellbeing of students. The weekly readings were usually pretty long and dense. With my TA, you did have to participate fairly often which meant you should have some understanding of the readings. There is also a suggested textbook chapter reading that pairs with the source readings of the week which I never found to be vital, though the professor and TA recommends it. The grading is 35% midterm essay (850 words + 500 word reflection), 15% Final part 1 (easy 100% as long as you turn in a photo of an artifact on time), Final part 2 (2500 word essay) 35% and 15% participation in section. All essay prompts were very open ended which some people did not like, but I didn't mind as it gave you a wide variety of topics to choose from in the class content. It's a fair class and you really just get out what you put into it.

I found this class super interesting, and the content was made even better with Professor Tutino. Not only did she exude high fashion, but she was evidently extremely passionate about the subject matter and that manifested in engaging lectures. She’s intelligent, witty and no nonsense. I could see however, someone who doesn’t care about history, being bothered by the workload and professor Tutino’s seriousness. She doesn’t cotyle and she doesn’t “baby” unlike other professors, so If that is what you are looking for, she is probably not the professor for you. However, I found her advice helpful and her support abundant.

In terms of discussion, they seemed wildly unhelpful. My TA was kind, but if you go to lecture and you read the textbook (or you have a basic understanding of the content) you will likely find the discussion unhelpful and time consuming as well.

She was very picky on the midterm. I went into her office hours and she asked me "is this English?" when reviewing my paper for the midterm. Your grade is based on 2 papers and 1 selfie you take with an artifact (you have to write about it later). I don't understand the good reviews because she will say one thing in lecture and if you write about it, she will mark it wrong. This class is too difficult for a lower division. She even said "you might have a hard time if you do not know anything about European history..." like that's your job to teach us?? It's just unnecessarily difficult.

Professor Tutino is very competent and engaging. The class was very fair.

I really enjoyed Professor Tutino's class! She is very passionate about the subject she teaches and it's portrayed through her lectures well. Lectures are not required, but I think they are worth attending. Professor Tutino is somewhat difficult just because she expects a lot out of you, but she's very helpful. Your grade is made up of two essays, a selfie with an artifact, and section participation. Discussions were honestly super boring and awkward, but it was easy to get participation points. Overall, a pretty easy class!

This class is a lot like AP World History. The professor is super nice but sometimes it was difficult to understand what she was saying. My TA wasn't really helpful. The reading is a lot and it was pretty hard to stay up to date. There are no tests, just a midterm and final paper that were easy to write.

(Note: we had a TA strike this quarter so your experience may vary). This class had its ups and downs. Professor Tutino is a no-nonsense professor who will simultaneously humble you in office hours (show up early!) but will absolutely give you the feedback you need. Don't waste her time; if you have a question, make sure you have examples of what you're working with so far. This class has one midterm essay, a TA section write up, and a final essay with two parts: a picture with a museum display and the essay itself. Not an easy A, but if you are willing to put in the work and sharpen your history writing, take this course. Also can I talk about her garbage can dress? Lady Gaga could never.

Took class while TA strike, so did nothing for this class except final essay after week 5. Class is completely dependent on TA, and if they grade harsh/easy. Patrick Morgan was a very good TA, chill and easy.
