Fall 2023 - I took this as a GE credit, however, I found the rigor and material of the course to be one of the higher difficulty GEs I have taken. Prof. Tutino does have class slides, however there is minimal writing on them, so it is super important to attend every lecture. At the beginning of the course she does mention that she does not give out extensions carelessly, however, when there is an extenuating circumstance she was very considerate and was willing to offer an extension. Not only are the lecture sections important, I found that the TA sections were even more helpful as the TAs tend to go more into depth and clarify some tricky subjects mentioned briefly in lecture. This is also a class in which the "required readings" are definitely required for success, and especially the class textbook as a preparation for lectures. While this was not a exceptionally intriguing topic for me personally, Prof. Tutino does a great job of keeping her lectures engaging and interesting. I recommend this class, but if you are looking to take an low-effort GE, I would not enroll in this class.

Fall 2023 - while not a very easy class, the prof. is pretty good. the main positives of the class are as follows: no tests, lectures are engaging, slides are posted, lectures a recorded, and attendance in lecture is not mandatory. you do have to write two papers (one 1000 words and the other 2000 words), but aside from that, there is very little additional work. it is not exactly an easy GE, but it is not too difficult and would highly recommend, especially if you are interested in the topic.

Fall 2020 - I took this class fall 2020 during covid and enjoyed it. I found it fairly easy although people seem to have really struggled on the midterm. She was a tough grader when it came to the papers and expects high quality work. If you can't write do NOT take this class. Class wasn't required and was honestly not super useful. However, discussions were INCREDIBLY important and I really enjoyed them. (35% Midterm Paper, 45% Final, 10% easy final assignment, 10% participation in discussions).

Winter 2016 - Tutino is a very challenging, but helpful professor. In the 97 Seminar, she has her students develop arguments using evidence from the readings. This may sound like a simple exercise, but Tutino is relentless and will pick your argument apart down to word choice. While defending your argument will be very tough and stressful (it was probably the most stress I ever been under in class that was not a test), she does this for your benefit and it really helped me to understand the process of arguing a historical thesis. Tutino is a very good professor who cares about her students and their learning. She begins class, and sometimes even halts discussion, just talking to her students asking about their weekend, interests, or just for the sack of talking. She is also hilariously Italian and it shows sometimes!

Winter 2020 - Although I haven't received my grade yet, I feel like I can give an accurate review of this class with it still fresh in my head. In short, her lectures are honestly incredibly engaging and funny, and I found myself actually wanting to go to her lectures (something I can't say about most other UCLA classes I've taken so far). The midterm was a short answer response to a passage from one of the important figures in 16th century history, and the final contains 3 short essay questions. Although I enjoyed her class, she is definitely not an easy grader, and was surprisingly intimidating to talk to one on one.
