I am currently taking Prof. Schein for Psych. 119N. I think it is best for me to evaluate him now while I am taking him, because I think if I got my grade (good or bad) first it would influence my opinion.
Dr. Schein is a TERRIBLE professor. He is completely out of touch with his students and reality in general. His lectures are very bad. He is very rude and condensing to students. This isn\355t the typical rudeness, though. It is very odd, one has to see it for themselves to understand. At times he would just ignore people when they would try and stay something. He is just very jumpy in his lectures, absolutely no order or continuity in his lectures!!!
He said all these things about his class and lectures on the first day of the quarter and they were all misleading and wrong. Stuff about how the \354quizzes\356 are just to make sure you did the reading, but when we took the quizzes they were pretty difficult and detailed. About the 5th week of classes, after someone complained to him about the difficulty, he said that he would like to provide justification for his exams and reading, but, in my opinion his justification was very weak, he basically said something to the effect of, \354I know my quizzes are hard, but they\355re not.\356 Which is completely unfair because through the quarter he said, they quizzes are only used to see if you did the reading\326just try and get the main idea\326 this and that\326 anyway\326.he lied.
READING: The reading was horrible. It was too expensive first off. Second, basically what he did was photocopy two or three books, reorganize the chapters and sold them as readers. They are so extremely repetitive. I felt like I was reading hundreds (literally) of pages of the same thing over and over. Moreover, the reader, from section to section, seems to have no continuity, like his lectures. It seems like you are just reading massive amounts of information. The reading is extremely boring. VERY BAD!
You are also required to do two presentations, a research paper, and attend two seminars. Just way too much work for this class. I don\355t see the point. I like doing presentations, and seminars are interesting, but that doesn\355t mean they have to be assigned to us all in the same class.
I have to mention two things. One, this is strictly describing him as a professor (for the most part). He seems to be a decent person and has done some nice things in class. He tries to learn peoples names, which is nice, but that does not mean anything. You don\355t have to know students\355 names to be a good teacher. Anyway, I think the saddest thing out of all of this is I don\355t think he realizes any of this, he is oblivious. I mean, who in the world would assign so much unnecessary, unorganized reading\326.
I took him for Psych 119N. I feel genuinely sorry for anyone that has to take him for a Life Science course. I don\355t recommend him at all\326 obviously.
It is obvious what I am saying is strong and there is a lot more I can say. However, it is unfair for teacher like Dr. Schein to be teaching. It don\355t mind difficult teachers or whatnot, but when teachers cannot truly be considered teachers at any stretch of the imagination, and the readings can\355t provide you with the tools to succeed in the class, and when the teacher is MISLEADING, then you enter a new field. (In my time at UCLA Dr. Schein is just one among a number of bad professors that demonstrate that UCLA has no priority in providing quality education for its undergrads.)
