Schein is the man! Take his classes if you EVER have the chance to. He loves lecturing and you'll love hearing his lectures. Very fair grader who stresses on work effort.
Loved his Schein-dance.
Be friends with your TAs. Don't start your paper until last minute.
Dr. Schein is an excellent professor. The lectures are very well organized, and are all offered on Bruincast, which I found extremely helpful. He's a very active lecturer, often acting out what he's explaining, making for an entertaining experience. He gives 2 midterms and a final, none of which are cumulative. You will be fine if you do all of the necessary things: read the chapters, attend and re-watch lectures, have questions ready for discussions and office hours, etc. It also helps that the material covered is very interesting, but that's just my opinion. I highly recommend this professor and this course.
Professor Schein is a blast! He always starts off his lecture with a joke or two to introduce a relaxed atmosphere (often at the expense of the UCLA football team lol). You won’t find yourself looking at your cell phone to see when it is time to get the hell out of there! He is very approachable and is always willing to answer questions. His tests are straight forward if you study and follow instructions. Overall I can say I had enough fun/learned a lot to recommend this class to anyone.
Professor Schein is a good lecturer. Two midterms and final and all are 50 multiple choice questions. The exams are non-cumulative. You need to write a 3-page research article review paper and it worths 10 points. To do well in the class, study everything from his lecture notes and pay attention to his lectures. It would be better to listen to his lectures one more time at home. Don't stress too much on the book because his exams will mainly focus on lecture. Please make sure you attend review sessions as well. It helps.
When you look at the scores above, you're going to immediately want to choose another prof for this course. But don't pay attention to it, it isn't true.
Prof. Schein is a very good lecturer. He's interesting, goes at slow pace (so you can actually follow and learn while in class, whoa what a concept), and is very congenial. His tests are multi-choice 50 questions but they're not too bad. Just know all his notes (I'm talking every word on every slide, forget the book) and you should do very...very well. Trust me.
The TA's make up weekly quizzes, which are actually pretty hard depending on your TA (because they take stuff straight from the book or that stupid CD-ROM that comes with the book) .
in sum, take it with Schein. Study notes for midterms/finals
study book/notes for quiz
:)
The class was really interesting, but there is a lot of material covered. However Schein is pretty fair in that he won't test you on small details and he doesn't have you memorize a lot of names. His lectures are pretty interesting, but the exams are difficult. Definitely get a good TA (Andy is awesome). Oh and there are weekly quizzes. If you don't know any biology, you should probably look for a different class.
Schein is a decent professor and relatively funny. Now, how difficult the class is depends on perspective. Compared to most pre-med classes, Psych 115 is similar in difficulty, probably slightly easier than most LS2/LS3 classes. Compared to most other upper div psych classes, however, its pretty damn hard. To do well in the class, you pretty much have to memorize and understand at least 85-90% of the lecture slides he posts online.
I took his Psych 115 course this fall. At first, I thought this class would be super hard, but Dr.Schein wiped all my worries away. He is very clear on explaining the material. His tests are easy (than I expected), because it is very conceptual. You don't have to memorize all the names of proteins, enzymes, and parts of anatomy etc. You only need to know how the system is related to the brain and how it works and stuff. very conceptual. For those of you guys who are interested in neurosience class, I think this class is good for tasting it and Dr. Schein is great in helping you guys to go forward.
I won't lie to you, this is a tough class. It WILL take up a decent chunk of your time, but, at the same time, you'll learn a lot. Schein is a very good teacher who knows his stuff. He can answer pretty much any questions you might have concerning the body and how it works. His tests ARE a little on the tougher side, but they're fair and won't test you on anything outside of what he's covered. If you're really interested in learning about the body, and you're taking some chill classes this quarter... maybe his class is worth looking into.
Professor Schein knows a WHOLE lot about a WHOLE lot, and the best part is he can actually EXPLAIN to you what's going on so that you understand the concepts... the best part about this challenging course was that he didn't expect you to learn the specific names of every single anatomical structure discussed, rather he required of you a conceptual understanding of what you had learned and how to apply it to answering the questions.. I won't lie: his tests are HARD, but they're completely duable if you know the material and his grading is on a nice curve... you DO have to study for this class, sorry kids.
