Grade: A

This review is for public health 150. She is an amazing professor! At first I was scared to take her because there wasn’t any reviews on the bruinwalk, but now I’m glad I took her! Grades are based on clicker points, a midterm, a 3 page paper, and a non cumulative final. Midterm questions are mostly based on her lecture slides so as long as you study the slides you should be good. This class is kind of on the easy side I guess. I always started studying(from scratch) like two-three days before the midterm/final and was still able to pull an A. The most important thing you should focus is not memorizing the datas , you should focus on the overall objective/concept of the lecture. There wasn’t anything to memorize for this class, if there is, she(or the TAs) will let you know that a particular percentage/statistics would be on the midterm. For the paper, you’ll get a perfect grade as long as you follow the rubric. There is also a super easy 5 point extra credit as well. Overall, this class was interesting and easy!

Professor Shaffir has been one of the best professors I have had here at UCLA. She is so well informed about the material, and even though our lectures were almost 2 hours long, it was very interesting, and she let us have a break halfway through. She was accommodating to the protesting situation and offered many chances for extra credit. This class made me wish I was a public health major. I would 10/10 recommend this class.

Hands down one of the best (and easiest) classes I've ever taken at UCLA. Dr. Shafir was so funny and engaging, and most importantly, accommodating. All lectures were recorded and attendance was not mandatory. If you watched the lectures and took notes carefully I think you are guaranteed an A!

I loved this class and it will definitely be my favorite one at UCLA! Dr. Shafir is hands-down one of the smartest, funniest, passionate, and clear professors on campus. The class was SO informative - if you're going into healthcare or law or public health or literally anything you HAVE to take this class. I wish I'd taken it sooner. It didn't even count for any of my major or minor requirements but I'm so glad I took it. I really looked forward to lecture and all the course materials are free and the teaching team was very accommodating and sent out study guides and did review sessions. The both the midterm and final were multiple choice, very doable and most of the class got As on both. highly recommend taking this class with Shafir, she's the BEST

Completely asynchronous, one midterm, one paper, one final. Must watch all lectures. Take notes on the lectures, essentially everything written down, and you will get an A easily. Quite literally almost all of the questions are pulled from very specific parts of the lecture, so don't skip any. Would definitely take again, it just takes effort in order to get the notes down in preparation for the open note tests.

Although I expected the exams to be easier, they were manageable along with the other few assignments. She’s honestly a great professor and tries her best to accommodate to students needs. Plenty extra credit opportunities including some on the actual exams. Its a lot of information but I’d recommend it if you’re interested in public health.

Everyone says this class is easy but our exams were very difficult!! The average for the midterm was 80%. Although professor Shafir gave us 2 extra credit points, the midterm brought my grade down a lot. Otherwise, the final was a bit more easier, but still the questions involve application and they were tricky. Otherwise, there are so many TAs but they literally don't do anything. You don't even need them or meet with them. We also had a 500-700 word paper to submit, but if we did not like our grade we were able to rewrite it and submit it for half credit. Nonetheless, considering how many positive comments there are about this class, I was definitely annoyed about my midterm score.

Professor Shafir is honestly the best! The material was very manageable and the tests were not bad either, I believe the average for the midterm was an A-. We had one midterm and a final which is not cumulative. It was open notes and proctored through zoom. You also do not need to attend lectures, but she had live sessions once a week and we would just talk about COVID or topics relating to the lecture for the week which she posts on CCLE. She is very helpful and one of the reasons why I am excited to minor in public health.

This class was completely online and asynchronous this quarter so take this with a grain of salt if you're in person. Professor Shafir is a very nice person and a solid lecturer. The course had very little work: two posts per module, watch/read the required material, and a 2-3 page public health editorial. The midterm and final were open note and multiple choice, but were still a bit tricky. You definitely need to review the material before tests because she gave 1 hour for 50 questions. She offers some extra credit, so I'd do it just to be safe. If you try your best in this class it should be an easy A.

Super great class! Great intro to public health, was what inspired me to pick up the minor. The professor is really engaging, makes jokes during lectures, and very sweet and understanding. Exams were straightforward.
