I write short stories myself and this class teaches me writing can be not fun at all and extremely subjective. Popham will change the theme of your paper and tell you sentence by sentence what SHE wants in there but not what YOU want.

One person out of the whole class gets A. If you want to torture yourself just go take it and spend more than 10 hours a week and pray for a "B and above".

Frankly speaking, Professor Popham is a very professional and helpful instructor. Clarity, Helpfulness are perfect. HOWEVER, the grading in this class is a disaster. You might work very very hard through a paper and finally got C just because she does not approve of your idea...... The workload, according to my fellows, is crazy, but I found okay. (Still might have much heavier workload than your major course.) In fact, you do have to do 2-3 small writing assignments per week so if you hate ddls, this class might drive you mad. THE WORST PART of this class is the A rate......I heard that only one among every class (20 members) can get an A......So try not to take Dr.Popham's EC3 if you have any other option. If not, and you are not that good at writing, change to PNP (available during covid19) as soon as possible, never try to gamble....Otherwise you will screw up your grades and gpa.

This class was the worst English class I have ever taken. The genres of essays she had us write were not useful or engaging, and she changes your thesis to exactly what she wants it to be, even though her thesis for one of my essays was unbelievably bad. She is not lenient, gives a ridiculous amount of busy work, and ultimately, I became a worse writer because of her class. If you don't revise your essays 3 times you will probably get below a B, and she gives so much busy work that you don't even have time to revise them. Literally take any other professor if you want to keep your sanity.

The workload of this EC3 is insane. Most of my other friends who took EC3 only needed to write 3 papers and a few journals, but I had to complete 3 papers (keep revising them until the end of the course), a quotation journal, a reflection journal, a writing log and many other writing in-class writing works.
But if you follow what Dr. Popham's comments, ask her questions after class or through emails (she replied really quickly), you will be fine.

You would learn some formatting in this class, but I don't think you would actually improve your writings. Sometimes you need to cater to Dr. Popham's taste. The workload is relatively heavy compared to other classes. If you are looking for an A, definitely would not recommend this class.

10/10 would not recommend to others. For an English Comp 3 class, most of my friends breezed by this class with other professors easily receiving A's and B's, however this professor gives a very heavy workload and hardly ever gives A's. Also did not feel that I was taught much, rather given hours of busy work. Some of the reasons of why she would not accept work/essays were for reasons such as the margins being not even an inch too wide etc. If you take this class and show up 1 second after the class is supposed to start, you will receive half participation for the entire class. Would not recommend, save yourself and take Creese or anyone else.

I do not suggest this class if you are just taking it for a GE. Professor is extremely nice when you talk to her, but expects so much out of her students for a GE class. I had to switch over to pass no pass because the first essay, which I worked really hard on, got me a C+. She has you submit all of the essays at the end of the quarter for an actual grade, so that did not affect my grade, but just from that, I knew what she expected from the essays was just too much. She literally edits the paper line by line, rewriting it how she wants it to be. She has you do things that make no sense just because that is how she likes it. There is absolutely no room for creativity. The only way to do well is to read her mind. Also apparently she only gives out one A per class. I have never taken an English class ike this before. Instead of analyzing quotes for literary devices, for the first paper, she had us write synonyms for each word in the quote and the body paragraphs were just sentences that included those synonyms. This class took the life out of me.

Definitely on the hard side of classes. With that said, she was a great professor who was willing to help you. Just go to office hours and revise your essays as much as possible based off of her comments. You will learn something in this class just try not to get frustrated. If you want an easy A then stay away. Also, if you need the comp 3 books text me, they're the original copies that are difficult to find. (818) - 358 - 9200
