Take her, Take her, Take her! If you're like me and have a mental block when it comes to writing then you will absolutely love her. She breaks everything down for you and explains what is expected of you. She always sends you reminders about the homework so you never forget and she is just about the sweetest lady when it comes to asking questions. Never once did I feel frightened or intimidated in her class..and if you're like me and don't enjoy being forced to talk in class- then this is the class for you. As long as you have a pleasant look on your face and smile every once in awhile that's your participation grade. You don't need to stress out about voicing your opinion about anything in her class. Yes, as others have put it- she does give a lot of busy work. But that's okay because it's easy busy work! Take this class, you won't regret it.
Popham is hands down the worst professor at UCLA. She does not care about or acknowledge different writing styles, she'll just delete your paragraph and comment, "?." She's also the sassiest professor ever, I asked her for a report on why she didn't pass me, (and mind you, the passing grade is a C, but she gave me a C-), and then she gave me sass and said "it was also disappointing to me as well seeing as you couldn't follow university standard." LIKE WHAT, YOU DIDN'T DO YOUR JOB CORRECTLY THEN. MIND YOU, HER WORKLOAD IS INSANE. She will assign an essay on a Monday, and have it be due Wednesday of that same week, on top of homework assigned EVERY CLASS. DO NOT TAKE HER! If you want your GPA and self-esteem to go down, then take her 100%
All of these reviews are so insane lols. She was not even a bad professor. I believe if you put in the work, you'll be fine. Yes, we do a lot of busy work but it does become helpful and easier to write the essays. It's only three essays and that's our grade. My first paper was a D- so... if I can pick up my grade from that then so can you. I constantly went to office hours and she really devotes all of her time to you and betters your paper. Her grading is very strict and annoying I might add but still, if you just keep asking for help you'll be okay. She doesn't tolerate tardiness at all and it's mandatory almost to show up to every class. It knocks down points off your grade so just be mindful of that. Besides this, she was a really sweet professor who seemed to care a lot about us and our grades.
She was very confusing in class and when emailed for clarification she was rude and was not very helpful. She often got off topic in class and would drag out her thoughts and would confuse the class. she often left you to learn on your own.
Lectures were not engaging. Seemed like we were constantly just given instructions and set off instead of being part of a class. Overall not too hard but not a very enjoyable class.
This class had a pretty heavy work load. I found that some assignments in her class was a lot of busy work, while other assignments were extremely helpful. This class has definitely helped me improve my writing. It is honestly what you make out of this class. She does not tolerate tardiness when it comes to peer review days. If you are late your essay will get penalized a full letter grade. SO BE ON TIME if you are taking this class. We had to write 3 essays and turned in our final drafts during finals week. Don't feel discouraged when she gives you your first initial grade because she will give you feedback on how to improve it. You can also always ask for help during office hours. I was initially discouraged when I saw a B- for my first draft, but I ended up getting an A in this class because I spent a lot of time revising my essays.
I would highly HIGHLY recommend getting a different professor. She thinks there is only one way to write papers and it's her way, and if it's not done her way then it is wrong. She also assigns a bunch of busy work and homework that is unnecessary and it that doesn't help towards the papers at all. I put in max effort into this class, got writing tutors and even went to the writing center on campus and none of them seemed to help. Such a terrible and unenjoyable class.
