Heavy workload. Must do all of the readings for every class (which is all horribly boring Native-American based literature), write a quotation journal on the readings every week, and re-write your papers over and over again.. This class was 3X as hard as English Composition 3... I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND
10/10 would not recommend to others. For an English Comp 3 class, most of my friends breezed by this class with other professors easily receiving A's and B's, however this professor gives a very heavy workload and hardly ever gives A's. Also did not feel that I was taught much, rather given hours of busy work. Some of the reasons of why she would not accept work/essays were for reasons such as the margins being not even an inch too wide etc. If you take this class and show up 1 second after the class is supposed to start, you will receive half participation for the entire class. Would not recommend, save yourself and take Creese or anyone else.
This class was a mistake. I took her because of the great reviews listed, but it was the opposite. The workload was so much and it was extremely hard. She was very strict and could be very mean about specific details, like MARGINS. I hated going to class because I would be so bored and cluttered with work. I would not take this class with this professor
Don't take this class with Popham because she is a shit professor. This class is extremely frustrating, Popham does not respect people's different writing styles and will make you hate every single essay you write. She makes completly innnapropriate comments on your writings simply because it doesn't match what she believes to be a good writing style.
I do not suggest this class if you are just taking it for a GE. Professor is extremely nice when you talk to her, but expects so much out of her students for a GE class. I had to switch over to pass no pass because the first essay, which I worked really hard on, got me a C+. She has you submit all of the essays at the end of the quarter for an actual grade, so that did not affect my grade, but just from that, I knew what she expected from the essays was just too much. She literally edits the paper line by line, rewriting it how she wants it to be. She has you do things that make no sense just because that is how she likes it. There is absolutely no room for creativity. The only way to do well is to read her mind. Also apparently she only gives out one A per class. I have never taken an English class ike this before. Instead of analyzing quotes for literary devices, for the first paper, she had us write synonyms for each word in the quote and the body paragraphs were just sentences that included those synonyms. This class took the life out of me.
Definitely on the hard side of classes. With that said, she was a great professor who was willing to help you. Just go to office hours and revise your essays as much as possible based off of her comments. You will learn something in this class just try not to get frustrated. If you want an easy A then stay away. Also, if you need the comp 3 books text me, they're the original copies that are difficult to find. (818) - 358 - 9200
Goodness gracious keep away from this classroom and professor if all you are trying to do is satisfy your Writing 1 requirement. The workload blew my mind. We had literally endless work to do since she wanted us to revise our essays throughout the entire quarter. You literally cannot get above a B+ in one of the grading categories if you do not have her revise your essays more than a number of times.
Furthermore, do not even TRY to miss a class if you are sick or for any other reason. She emphasizes to not miss a single day much less even be LATE. She takes participation extremely serious, and you will see this with the several dozens, and dozens, and dozens of handouts you will receive (no, I am not kidding. You receive about ten handouts every class). Good luck appeasing this woman, her grading is tremendously harsh.
I honestly believe that this class is what you make of it. Yes, she assigns quite a bit of assignments, but all of them truly do relate and help with your final 3 essays. I'm not going to put on a front and say that this class is an easy A, but if you engage in the classes, ask for help when you need it, and use the resources she provides, you can get so much from this class, trust me :) Good luck friends!!!
