If you have the chance to take English Composition 3 with Professor Crosby, do it!! He is absolutely amazing and extremely funny. As long as you turn your work on time, follow directions, and spend a good amount of time on your writing assignments, you are almost guaranteed an A or A+. I do not know anyone that got less than an A- in my lecture. I hate writing but he made the class very enjoyable and made me want to actually do the work. Crosby cares about your growth as a writer and even cares about your transition to college life. The best part of the class was that you did not do much work, but you learn an extreme amount and improve your writing greatly. There are only approximately 20 kids in a class, providing an intimate class setting where you get to know everyone, and you feel comfortable sharing. Professor Crosby does an amazing job of fostering this environment and I even made several friends from the class.
As for specifics of the class, the theme was Narrative Inquiry and the Narrative Self, which I found very interesting. There is a decent amount of homework for the class that is somewhat time intensive, but it is very manageable if you just force yourself to sit down and complete it. Most homework assignments are something he calls Critical Reading Responses (CRRs), in which he assigns a story or newspaper article and all you do is annotate the reading and answer a set of questions he gives you. He always asks for a few photos of your annotations to ensure that you actually annotated it which are very important because if you do not turn them in, the highest grade you can receive for the assignment is 70%. Professor Crosby does not have a textbook for the class and the stories for homework are instead assigned from pdfs and/or website links of stories and newspaper articles that he posts to CCLE. The readings were always interesting and covered current topics such as global warming and gang violence. The homework can take some time as the questions usually require textual evidence and they are somewhat open ended. For us, homework was always due at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday or Sunday. As long as you turn in your assignments on time and they are complete, you get a 100%. Crosby does not care if you are "correct" or have the same opinions as he does, he just wants to see that you are critically thinking and practicing writing. The CRRs become repetitive but they do improve your writing.
There are two essays for the class: a personal narrative and scholarly personal narrative. We got lucky and instead of writing two separate narratives, we only wrote one personal essay that we then reused and transformed into a scholarly personal narrative. This was because we ran into issues with time since Professor Crosby is still perfecting the class. We also had to complete an annotated bibliography with the scholarly personal narrative which did not require much work at all. He even has weeks of class where you do not meet for lecture and instead have a one-on-one meetings where he helps you with your essays and answers any questions you have.
Professor Crosby is a stickler when it comes to attendance and using electronics during class. Professor Crosby expects you to show up to class and participate. You are allowed one excused absence if you are sick or have a family emergency. His class is also a no screen classroom unless he asks for you to take your laptops out. If he sees you using them when you're not allowed to, he will email you reminding you to not use them. These rules are not really hard to follow and participating is very easy.
Overall, English Composition 3 with Professor Crosby was my favorite class this quarter, even though I dislike writing and English classes. As long as you show up to class, participate, do not use electronics during class, do all parts of assignments, turn assignments in on time, and put time into your essays, you are guaranteed a good grade (most likely an A). The workload is not too bad and the assignments cover current controversies which makes the class interesting. Professor Crosby is friendly and funny, and even cusses sometimes in class. He is amazing and so is the class, so take it if he is offered as a professor. You will not regret it!
Professor Crosby's class was very enjoyable. He created a friendly and intimate environment among the classmates. There were about 20 people in the class, and most of us walked away having made relationships with at least one other classmate, which I admire Crosby for doing because we were all freshmen.
As for the class, he assigned about two readings each week that we had to read, annotate, and answer about 6 questions on. All of the assigned readings were provided (in the form of links or PDFs) and were very interesting. Not a single reading from this class was boring or too difficult to understand. The questions were very simple as well and remained relatively the same for each reading throughout the quarter.
There was no final exam, and the whole quarter is devoted to writing one main essay. He requires multiple submissions of drafts leading up to the final essay. He provides a substantial amount of time for this essay and offers many opportunities to help one-on-one improve the drafts. There were about two or three weeks that we did not meet as a class. During those weeks, the students who wanted help with their essays were able to make appointments with Crosby for a workshop.
Overall, this class was easy but I also learned much from it. If you're looking for an EngComp3 lecture, try to get Crosby if you can.
I mean all in all I don't think I could've had a better English Comp professor than Crosby himself. I highly recommend taking him as he's such a nice individual and is great at communicating what he expects from the class. The readings in class were eye opening and thought provoking. I very much enjoyed his class.
Professor Crosby is the best! He's so funny and really makes the material interesting. Let's be honest, no one in the class really wants to be reading and writing essays while we have other classes going on. But Crosby really picks out some cool stories and makes the assignments super easy. There is a bit of reading and writing but it's totally manageable. Basically, as long as you do the work you get an A. If you need to get ur Writing I requirement done TAKE CROSBY! (also you don't have to buy anything for the class)
Professor Shane Crosby represents the best of many worlds: he helps fulfill your English I requirement, he gives you a good grade, he doesn't give you that much work, and you ACTUALLY LEARN stuff from him. It's amazing, but this professor is literally a guaranteed A, as long as you don't do something stupid (like have 2 or more unexcused absences).
Workload is very generous. There are weekly assignments, but these are very easy, just a little time consuming. Make sure to do these, as you can only get a 70% maximum grade on that assignment if it's late! We were supposed to have two big papers for this class, but Professor Crosby mercifully lowered that to one paper only.
His lectures are highly engaging, and you learn stuff. Unlike high school English perhaps, you actually want to be there, and it's the same in the conferences. He's a very down-to-Earth type of person, who genuinely is interested in your life, how you're adjusting to college, and whatnot. Not afraid to cuss out in lecture; this just helps make him even more relatable to the students.
Seriously, as long as you follow all the guidelines that he provides to you, you will BREEZE through this class with an A. I shudder to think if there was anyone in my 22 person class that was in danger of an A- or below (Professor actually told us on the last day of lecture that he expected all of us to get As in the class).
Overall, HIGHLY recommend that you take his class. It's so worth it, you discuss about engaging topics (America currently, politics, global warming, racial and other stereotypes in society), learn lots of material, improve your writing, all the while earning an A and not even taking up that much time per week. Excellent overall.
Professor Crosby made this class worth every second! He cares so much about helping students improve their writing which is why he assigns a good amount of writing based assignments. UCLA needs more professors like Crosby who make class a comfortable and fun learning environment. I would 100% recommend this teacher.
I liked Professor Crosby's teaching! You always knew exactly what he wanted writing wise. This is his second career, so he brings in a lot of insightful experiences that makes his lectures engaging. If you know MLA format and can write a good thesis statement, you're chillllling in this class.
Professor Crosby's class was enjoyable and relatively easy. As long as you follow his instructions on prompts exactly how he wants them, there is no reason for him not to give you an A. Also make sure you are never late to class and never miss class as that can impact your grade negatively.
Very approachable and helpful. Professor Crosby is very engaging and wants his students to do well. Most of the heavy lifting is done earlier on in the class leading up to the midterm which is a rhetorical analysis essay. Some busy work. Very fair grader, holds helpful office hours.
