The workload of this class was hell in the beginning but as you reach week 5 or 6, you will get comfortable with the pace of the class. Make sure you attend EVERY class and complete EVERY HOMEWORK on time. The class is a cakewalk unless you challenge the professor. You will genuinely feel yourself get better with your writing. The lessons are super useful. There are tons of group activities and he always appreciates new ideas and voices. Talk to him during office hours and discuss your narrative's progress. He is always friendly and gives the best advice.
Pro tip: A+ is 99-100%, A is 90+%
so don't stress if you mess up one or two homework.
TAKE CROSBY!!! This class is honestly such an easy A
- All assignments are graded on competition, so just follow the directions. They usually look like reading 1-2 short stories a week (usually 10 pages or less each) and answering a few questions about each, and an inquizitive assignment due on sundays
- Final is just one story you write. It is really easy because you write about a memory you have had in your life and he spends the whole second half of the quarter walking you through it and reading multiple rough drafts of your paper. He literally tells you what corrections to make, so as long as he sees that you fixed them in your final draft, you'll get a 100%
- Class is discussion based so as long as you find at least one part that stood out to you in the readings and talk once or twice in class, you'll be fine
- He is very funny and real, he will often make you laugh and swears a lot which makes him very authentic
- It is a very intimate classroom so you'll easily make a friend or two
- The only cons are attendance is mandatory, he doesn't tolerate tardiness and you cant use electronics in class (but honestly its not that big of a deal because you don't need them anyways or take notes since you just discuss the readings in class)
I was not a fan of this class. He said no phones or iPads but didn't say anything about computers, then got mad when we brought them to take notes. He said we can only bring our computers when he wanted us to. He make errors in the assignment description or assign the wrong thing and instead of fixing his mistake and accepting responsibility, he didn't bring it up and gave us bad score. He wasn't very understanding, even if you had valid reasons. During class he would constantly make us do group assignments. He showed us some very triggering things without even letting us know before hand (like people being lynched or set on fire). Attendance and participation was required, but a lot of the times he wouldn't plan the time during class accordingly and he would talk too much. This caused us to run out of time and everyone wasn't able to participate even though we raised our hands, then when it I brought it up he said I should've raised my hand faster. Either way someone wouldn't get credit because he loves to hear himself talk so much. He cancelled class one time because he was so tired, and then made us have individual zoom meetings during a holiday. The class was overall easy to get a good grade, but he made it unbearable. One of the worst professors I have had at this school.
Crosby is so sweet.
Assignments: There are writing assignments that are due before class. This can be a hit or miss as they are easy but quite tedious work cause of the writing.
Essays: Only 1 essay throughout the quarter but there are drafts needed but it is totally easy because the essay is about you. You only submit I think 2 rough drafts and submit the final revision as the final essay.
Engcomp 2 with Shane Crosby is the move. This class is very easy and consists of many small assignments that will require minimal time per week which effectively pads your grade. The main assignment is a writing assignment about your own personal story it is pretty easy and graded very leniently. You really just have to do the work. Crosby has cool discussion based classes and overall this class is an easy A+.

I really loved this professor and only created an account to write about him. I love English but I also hate it at the same time and it really dreaded me knowing I had to take an English class in college, but professor Crosby changed that for me. He really is a good professor and would've taken him again if I had the chance to. It's surprisingly easy to get an A in his class. Just do what he tells you to do and you'll get an A. I'm not saying he grades based on completion, but he grades based on you doing the work that's asked in the question. No need to be all fancy, but you have to show yourself and your personality. Technically the bare minimum in a class. He changed me not knowing he did. Take him!!!
Mr. Crosby is cool at first but then he becomes heartless later on. He grades very straight to the point and you will have a good grade as long as you do your work. But one thing that ticks him off is PHONES and TARDIES, so don't do that. The final he gave us was absolute TRASH. He never clearly explained how to do the essay or gave us a clear example. He grades our essays so unfairly and never responded back to my emails. I literally had an A in his class for the 6 weeks and it unfairly dropped the last week. Crosby has no life and now I see why. He thinks he knows everything but he doesn't and has no heart about that final or how to recover your grade knowing you were a good student. Overall good class and teacher, but be careful with him cuz he can stab you in the back when you least expect it.
This guy is nice but not accomodating to tardies or absences. I would not recommend taking this class but if you have to definitely do not schedule it right after another class. His policy is that every two tardies will lower your grade by an entire letter grade. This means that if you log into the zoom thirty seconds late or have any sort of technical problems you will be marked tardy with no questions asked. There is a lot of work for this class but it is not extremely difficult so just make sure you keep up and you will be fine.
I think from the overall scores and reviews TAKE THIS CLASS. Its probably going to fill up due to all the amazing reviews but if you can takeeee ittttt. Homework is what you review in class so class times is always a discussion class rather than boring lectures! There is only one essay in which you turn it into a scholarly research essay. I cannot stress this enough it's an easy A if not easy B.
