I'm not a person who likes literature. I just took this class because I need GE. The workload of this class is just reading literature,writing a response paper(1 page,double spaced accepted),and 1 midterm and final. As long as you read the required reading and you can answer all the questions from review sheet he send for both midterm and final, you will be definitely okay. He give some ID, but you'll be fine at least you READ the reading. He is always open to anyone's thinking about literature. Every time I was in the class, I have never felt that he ignore anyone's argument. At some week, we need to long literature, but it is not a big deal. He gives SAME midterm and final questions from review sheet and getting 100% for response paper is piece of a cake. Take this class! First, Professor is really good, second, you don't need to worry about midterm and final because you know the questions he will give, third, A guaranteed at least you read all the reading. I had a wonderful spring with him.

Lippit was boring but this class was so easy it didn't even matter. I skimmed the readings and almost never showed up to lecture. The only homework we had was a weekly response to the readings, and we could choose 1 of 5 or 6 questions. You could usually answer the questions by reading summaries or just skimming through the first part of the books. The midterm was just matching a quote to the work it came from and its author, and a few discussion questions straight from the homework questions, and a short essay. Discussions were super helpful though. The TAs just went through the homework questions and if you write down what they say and just spit it out on the exams, you'd do fine. The final also wasn't cumulative.

Professor Lippit does not deserve a bad review for this class. While it's true that his lectures are not that engaging, I really love the selected films and readings. The workload is very light. There's a response paper that you have to submit every week (roughly a page long), but basically there's no right or wrong answer for these assignments. As long as you watch the films and do the readings, the assignments shouldn't be much of a problem. The exam questions are taken straight from the weekly assignments, so again as long as you do your work throughout the quarter you should be fine. He also gives extra credits (2.5%) which I think is pretty generous. Overall, it's a very chill class and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in Japanese literature and films.

I really loved taking this class. The only criticism I have with Mr. Lippit was his voice. He is very soft-spoken, and even with a microphone, if there was a minor disturbance, it was very hard to hear him. However, the class itself was both engaging and interesting. Each week had a different theme of literature, consisting of a short story/book and a movie. I have to admit, during the first half the semester, the movies were rather long but the stories were relatively short. The opposite occurred during Weeks 7-10. Section is considered mandatory, as attendance is worth 10% of your grade. I would definitely take this class again; its workload was minimal at best. All you have to do is write a 1 page report double-spaced every week. The midterm and final were pretty straightforward (the final is non-cumulative). If you have the opportunity, definitely take this class!
