I had Jain for MAE 94. He taught only the drafting part of the class. He primarily used powerpoint slides and he has a really boring voice so it was really easy to fall asleep in lecture.
He had us buy SolidProfessor to learn SolidWorks and we had to watch about 12 hours of video. The TA didn't teach us anything, he was only there to help if we had any questions.
The only bad part about his tests is that he puts a couple of things that are said during lecture and NOT in his slides. But if you get everything else right, you should get an A.
The final project was actually graded pretty fairly and I ended up with an A in the class.
Professor Jain was very good at teaching concepts of CAD. His lectures were a little dry at times, but I feel like I learned a lot from this class.
His midterm is pretty straightforward, just review his lecture notes and do the homework and in-class exercises and you'll do fine. The final is a little harder, but not hard to get an A.
As for the project, he leaves that all to the TA. The TA teaches us how to use Autodesk Inventor, while Professor Jain teaches us how the theory. The project is by far the most time consuming assignment of the class. Make sure to start early and ask the TA for help when you are stuck. Our TA, Sam Goljahi was pretty good at teaching us Inventor. This is a good class to take over the summer, since you would have more time to work on the project than a normal quarter with a full load of courses.
This professor is overall very bad from my experience.
This guy's lecture isn't even considered to be any good, if you sit at the 4th or 5th row, you sometimes can't even hear what he is saying. Basically it would be a waste of time sitting in the classroom listen to his lecture because all he talks about is in his slides. Most people in the back rows just fell asleep. He also never come to the lab section to teach CAD stuff. I sometimes doubt if he know how to use Autodesk CAD himself. How bad can a professor be of teaching the course without knowing the stuff hes teaching!
Besides this professor mainly does not concern about the students, even if you get an A for the classes, and asking for reference letters, trying to get a contact with him, you will not find him anywhere, he just do not care, he never response to your email, you cannot find him in his office hour. This guy is doing whatever he can to avoid you and if you finally managed to find him in the hall way, he just told you :" I don't have time!I've got a full time job right now." Not even a sorry he would say to you. I seriously doubt his attitudes towards the students.
this guy is useless. he had the nerve to give me an A-. no one gives me an A- if I ever see him I am going to kick him in the balls because that's what he deserves and nothing less.
Lectures: turns the lights off and whispers with one tone for two hours. everyone sleeps and facebooks(ya those aren't your real friends loser) I went once and it sucked.
Labs: TA was some pretentious asshole. he showed us how to do some stuff in autodesk inventor. it was ultimately useless because I couldn't remember how to do them when i needed it.
Midterm: easy got barely >90
HW: not too bad.
projekt: people made some of the jankiest shit on the planet. some box with color on it is now a car. and a stick with two wheels at the end of it is now a bike but anyway, he gave me 87 or something even though my bike kicked ass and was the coolest evar. he didn't say why I got sucha low grade.
Final: easy.
FINAL SCORE: FAIL
you probably don't have much choice in who you take for this class but be prepared for some sanjeev on sanjeev action. dont forget popcorn and some lube.
He covered the material very well, you'll come out of the class with good knowledge of CAD and engineering drawings. The tests and homework were clear cut, he'll tell you what to know for the tests.
He also seemed pretty concerned about the students, he remembered my name and asked about my project even though I never talked to him about it outside of submitting the proposal.
All in all he was a good Professor, probably won't be your favorite professor, but I definitely recommend taking him.
