The most important part of her class is participation, it makes up 25% of your grade. Despite getting A's on pretty much every single assignment my grade came down to participation resulting in the low grade I got in the class. It completely blindsided me. If you want to get a good grade you have to participate every single day and not miss any of her classes except for the one free pass she gives. I would not recommend taking the class with her if you have a hard time participating or don't like participating because in her class it makes or breaks your grade.
I came into this class (4W) thinking I was going to hate it and do horribly but boy I was mistaken. Samantha is really chill and gives us a variety of class activities/projects that are actually fun and entertaining. She really cares about her students and allows us to make up for missed class. She might be a strict grader when it comes to papers (there are four of them but two are short/easy) but honestly as long as you yourself are thorough when writing them you can get an A. I did and I never really considered myself that skilled of a writer. While she is strict in the sense that you have to thoroughly convince her on your argument, she's really lenient with respect to style (i.e. you can use informal language, "I," and whatnot as long as there's substance).
The previous reviewer for some reason made a big deal over participation but honestly if you say like a couple things each class you'll get full points; they don't even have to be the "right answer" because what she looks for is that you're at least trying to engage in whatever the topic of discussion is and that's how it usually is....She's also pretty lenient when it comes to tardiness but don't take advantage of that because for how nice and caring she is that's just straight up disrespectful.
Overall Samantha is the bomb and you will not regret taking her class.
Professor Morse's class was honestly the most engaging class I've taken thus far in college. She is genuinely passionate about her subject, cares about her students, and is ultimately gifted in teaching. She incorporates variety in both her syllabus and lesson plans, and ultimately makes the class engaging, fun, and worthwhile for a variety of students, even those taking the class just to get their Writing II requirement out of the way. Compared to many English courses this one had a pretty tolerable courseload, and if you are quick with reading and writing papers (though this class definitely wasn't overwhelming with the amount of writing needed) you'll definitely be fine. I've recommended this class to countless other students. Samantha is the best! ( :
Samantha is such a passionate professor who genuinely enjoys whatever topic she teaches. She has this ability to teach super engaging lectures on topics I wouldn't normally find myself interested in. She cares a lot about her students; she not only learns the names of each and every one of her students but also makes an effort to try to get to know us. She also encourages participation from everyone because a majority of the class is discussion-based. However, she does understand that some students are shy so she allows them to get participation credit through office hours or email. Because Samantha does a great job in initiating the discussions and creating a comfortable environment to share thoughts and opinions, most students do end up participating and are engaged in the conversation. As for the workload, it's pretty manageable; the professor understands that her students can get busy and warns us ahead of time when there are heavier and/or more difficult readings coming up. Most of the readings are up on CCLE or can be found online but you may have to purchase a novel or two for the class. She also puts her lecture slides on CCLE as well as provides resources to help with essay writing, close readings and other useful stuff. The essays were tolerable; as long as you manage to prove your argument with appropriate evidence you'll receive a good grade. In addition to essays, you'll also have group projects that were fun and not too demanding.
Overall, I did enjoy this class and learned a lot from the discussions we had. Samantha is honestly super amazing at what she does and I guarantee you'll love her when you take this class!
