PLEASE TAKE SOCIOL 20 WITH PROF GADDIS AT ALL COSTS.
Prof Gaddis is def the best professor I ever had at UCLA. He is super understanding and concerned about his students. He gave 6% extra credit in total out of 100%!!! You can miss three discussion sessions and still get 2% extra credit. He even made the final optional, just your midterm grade. All the lecs is recorded, he had weekly Q&A session if you have any questions.
Here is the grading component:
Weekly homework 2% each x 11 = 22% : 20 questions multiple choice, very straightforward as long as you do the readings
Discussion session exercise: 4% each x 9 = 36% : Short answer questions, usually 3-5 questions each week
Discussion session attendance 2% : Attendend 6 discussion session to get full credit
Exams: 23% each x 2 = 46% : Both midterm and final are 60 questions multiple-choice, open book open note, mostly from homework

Professor was incredibly understanding and always put the students and their concerns first. You were allowed to miss three discussions with no penalty, he made the final and last two discussion exercises optional. There were quizzes each week that were very straightforward and were easy after reading the chapters. I really enjoyed this class.

Soc 20 is a challenging class regardless of which professor teaches it. However, professor Gaddis has an amazing curve that makes it very hard to fail the class. His exams are tough. You need to think critically about each question to answer them correctly. THERE IS NO RESEARCH PAPER. I think this is the best thing about the class. He's funny and very understanding. There is an I-clicker quiz every week, which are pretty easy for the most part. I would highly recommend.

You start off the class with an A - grading scale was strange in that it was hard not to get an A
-Weekly quizzes that help you study for the midterm and final.
-Midterm - no multiple choice - all free response
-Final is cumulative and free response but the study guide helped so much.
HONEST OPINION: lectures are boring but hes funny. If you complete and memorize the study guides youre set. easy A. great lecturer too. 10/10 reccomend

Dr. Gaddis is AMAZING! He really cares about the students. The weekly quizzes and homework assignments are very straightforward and the grading structure is a good combination of exams, quizzes and homework. Since this was COVID-19 quarter, everything was online, but the course was very organized and I learned a lot. In the zoom discussions in the honors seminar, he asked us each week how we were doing, as he really did care about how the transition was affecting us. The material was not too much, but enough to learn a lot. The textbook and lectures were pretty straightforward, and the exams and quizzes were based on that material, so there were no surprises. If you study the book and watch the lectures, an A is easy.

I can honestly say that this is one of the best professors I have had so far. He set the grading scale up to 104% which allowed us to be able to get an A+. His exams are straightforward you just have to study and take your time on the weekly quizzes. I overall loved the class and liked that he really cared about his students.

honestly professor Gaddis really is GREAT! He really took into consideration everything going on, no final it was just your midterm grade and the midterm was open note and you had 3 hours to complete (only took about 1 hour and it was multiple choice). We had a weekly quiz based on a chapter of the book and weekly assignment, but they were both very simple and quite easy.

Took this class during spring 2020/remote learning quarter. Gaddis was really accommodating and supportive of students. Even with his leniency, I feel like I learned a lot.
The textbook he assigns for the course is a pretty good textbook, and most of the quizzes/assignments/exams adhere pretty closely to its outline. My best advice is just to do the chapter of reading each week and you'll be set!

At least during covid, this class was very easy. We only had one lecture a week, it was recorded, and if you went to lecture you got extra credit. There are no papers, and the material is very understandable. Every week there was one(ish) quiz, one quick discussion exercise, and discussion to attend (but you could miss 2 for no penalty). Gaddis was one of the most understanding professors during this time, his lectures (or Q&A sessions) were not very interesting but overall the class information was great to learn. I can already tell that this class is helping me in other classes where I can apply these research tips.
