The class was awesome and Professor White is a total sweetheart! Listening to his lectures were like listening to the nicest grandfather tell stories. He gives clear lecture outlines at the beginning of each class that include 95% of what he says in lecture and his tests come straight from the lecture, though the texts provide substantial detail that would be helpful. He often brings the class outside for smaller group discussions, includes role-playing and interactive teaching methods, shows great videos, and even includes a field trip! The paper was on a visit you must make to a religious institution that wasn't of your own religion. The instructions were clear and it was fairly graded. I cannot recommend this class more, but he only teaches once a year so if you see him as the professor for any class, add the class immediately!

Prof. White made History of Religion in America most enjoyable. He truly cares for his students, and even schedules a fun field trip to three religious institutions. I HIGHLY recommend taking this professor, you will learn extensive knowledge about many American religious traditions while having fun as well. Very successful as a historian, yet very modest and caring towards students and the subject. One of the best professors I have encountered at UCLA!
