This is an easy ass class. I was taking six classes so I wasn't able to get an A but in normal circumstances, an A is super doable. Detels is a hella boring professor and his lectures are super useless. I went to the first half of the first class and stopped showing up because the lectures are useless. Detels often quotes himself and just reads off the slides. What I did instead was a day or two before the midterm and final I crammed and memorized the slides which is how you succeed in this class. I'd also recommend getting your hands on previous exams if you can. The material is pretty straightforward and makes sense. If you need upper division credit then TAKE THIS. It is an easy A and you don't even need to come to class if you don't care about learning.

I thought this class was super interesting, solely due to the material. All of the topics that were covered were pretty engaging to me. Most of the lectures are from guest lecturers, which I actually really enjoyed since it kept the class pretty novel and interesting. Most lectures are pretty much just reading off the slides though, and the midterm and final are both based on the lecture slides, so I suggest going through those a ton of times when you study. Your final grade is only dependent on your final exam grade, unless you do worse on the final, which then your midterm counts for 30%. The tests are pretty tricky too - sometimes the questions are pretty specific, and you really have to know the lecture slides to get the right answer. Detels has a lot of options that are "all of the above", "A and B", "C and D", and so on that can throw you off quite a bit. People say his curve is super generous, but I honestly disagree. I worked my ass off studying for this class, and got an 88 on the final, which curved to a 92% as my final grade. However, thankfully, Detels offered 1% extra credit if you attended an event on campus, which I went to, so I ended with an A overall. TL;DR the class may seem easy since there's no homework or discussion, but you really do have to study a lot to get a good final grade in the class, in my opinion.

I hated this class because it was extremely boring. Only an easy A because of the curve. The exams are actually kind of difficult.

Make sure you actually go to class in order to give yourself as much time as possible with the slides. When people say that all you need is the slides to do well they mean it but it can be very difficult to extract all of the facts you need to ace the tests without going through them multiple times. I stopped going to class after the midterm and going through those hundred slide powerpoints trying to write down every little fact I thought was important two days before the final sucked.

The only thing that determines your grade in this class is your final. There is a midterm but it doesn't factor into your grade unless you do worse on the final. Make sure you do the extra credit. I regret not doing it because I was half a point away from an A- but got a B+ because of that difference.

I feel like these other reviews make Detels sound bad but he seemed like a pretty nice dude to me tbh.
The class is quite easy if you review all the slides in detail. All of the lecturers, Detels included, could definitely improve on how well they engage the class. Majority of them read straight off the slides without adding much further information. This is how most of the class ends up doing pretty alright without attending lecture. Most of the class had pretty mediocre performance on the midterm, so the purpose of the midterm is essentially to show you how detailed the final will be. If you're not good at memorizing smaller details, this may not be the right class for you.
Professor Detels is also pretty generous with his curve, as shown by the grade distribution. For this quarter, 83.5 was the lower-end cutoff for an A-, and 89 was the minimum for an A.

Only components of this class are 1 midterm and 1 final exam, both multiple choice. No homework, no discussion, no participation grade. If you do better on the final than the midterm, then your final grade is your overall grade in the course. If you do worse on the final, then the midterm counts for 30% of your overall grade and the final counts for the rest. Each two hour lecture is comprised of a very long slide show, and the slides are posted on CCLE prior to lectures. Detels only gives about 40% of the lectures and the rest are given by guest speakers. Overall, this class easy because has no workload other than studying for the midterm and final. However, the class and its content is often pretty boring and the slide shows are way too long - I would have liked them to be shorter and focused on content that mattered.

This class is a lot of stat-crunching and fighting to stay awake. However, you do learn a lot about public health in the process of cramming for the tests. Detels is extremely generous with the final grade curve, and does give A+s if you do well enough above the average. There is one midterm and one final, and the final can replace your midterm grade if you do better on the final, so STUDY HARD for the final! Look for practice questions and tests from any friends to get a sense of how his tests are, as they are very tricky and sometimes ask for obscure stats that you wouldn't immediately get from the slides.

There are a few guest lecturers that stood out, and there were also lecturers that I did not enjoy listening to, despite their proficiency in the field. It is a low-commitment class that will still teach you plenty about public health and what we should look out for to help achieve health equity.

Dr. Detels is a legend in his field. The class is set up that Dr. Detels gives his lectures but also half of the time guest lecturers are brought in to talk about a certain topic. The lectures are long, but usually pretty interesting for the most part as long as you stay engaged. The tests were all multiple choice questions. It can get tricky since he likes to use the "All of the Above" and "a and c" type answers in the same question. But, overall its not that bad
