I took PH 150. This is an extremely easy course. There were a lot of athletes and seniors in this class and they barely came. Even a slug can get an A in this course without even coming. Besides this, he is extremely interesting and the class is extremely worth it. No downside as there are 80% As or A+s. I mean its impossible the fail the way the class is set up.

Fall 2019 - Went to every lecture, took detailed notes, memorized a truckload of useless stats/details and got a B? It's the format of his test that makes everything so confusing and frustrating. He also doesn't even base his test questions on the emphasized details and the extra information (not in the uploaded slides) given in the lectures. He was really frustrated about his students not showing up to the lectures, but he made those lectures pointless and purposeless for his test anyways. Here's a breakdown of this quarter's grade distribution: A+ ~1% A ~7% B+ ~3% B ~66% B- ~11% C ~10% C- ~1% Long story short, he thinks his students don't do well on his tests, because they are too lazy to attend the lectures and study for the exams. So, he throws out a bunch of B's and tells his students to not complain about their grades and instead be "nice to your professor." This class is not worth your time and stress!

Don't take his class for PH150. Worst public health class and curve. This quarter there were no A-'s or B+'s given out. Everyone who took it over summer got A's with another professor. The readings are dumb some are over 100 pages and yes he does test you on them too. Funny guy but doesn't give a crap about the students. If you have good T.A.s they might help out the class. If you're in the minor or a Soc Gen major like me, don't take the class with this professor, it's really disorganized.

I took PH 150 with Professor Detels and it was an alright class. It gave good exposure to the different aspects of public health and helped me find out what I was interested in. Unfortunately, Detels doesn't really teach most of the class. I found the other guest speakers not quite clear. Grading wise, I found this class much harder than Bruinwalk raters said. I was actually concerned about my grade in this class. You definitely need to memorize the slides which can be hard since some lectures have 100 slides. I definitely underestimated the amount of studying needed for this class and didn't do so well on the midterm. His questions can be tricky too. Overall, this class is a hit or miss. I got lucky in the end and did well enough on my final to ace the class. I wouldn't say that the readings are integral to acing the class. It really is mostly just the memorizing the slides unlike what the TA's say. It does seem like this class is getting harder and harder since the older exams that he gives out seemed much easier.
