This is a great class to fulfill the historical analysis GE. The workload is quite manageable, with about 50-80 pages of reading a week and eight weekly 1-2 page reading responses. These make up 40% of the grade, with 20% being discussion participation and the other 40% being a group project that includes your whole section. The project can be tough to coordinate but is graded generously. Professor Kelley is a great lecturer and, because the lectures mostly serve to build off the reading and aren't necessary to prepare you for any final, many people don't attend them. I think it's worth it to attend these if you can, as they cover not only historical topics but also current events and have a lot of research put into them. Take this class if you want to learn a lot with little stress over your grade.
Professor Kelley is wicked knowledgeable about history. What makes this class a little hard is the number of things you have to read and that we cover a lot of history in each lecture so sometimes the timeline gets confusing. Honestly, the midterm and final papers were pretty hard. It was one of those where they ask you like 12 things in the prompt and it can be tricky to organize.
There wasn't technically much work to turn in other than the midterm paper, final paper, and an easy group project. I learned a lot from this class and I would definitely take a class from him again. His voice is very soothing and he was very helpful and patient with questions and is always around for office hours to chat.
I took this class as an "easy GE" and did not regret one thing. The teachers and TA's are truly there to help you throughout this class. As my lectures were posted all online, I was able to go through the class at my own pace, while given the chance to ask questions during live discussion. I enjoyed discussion because it was more a class discussion rather than another lecture, allowing everyone to communicate with one another about the new topic. Definitely take this class if you are interested in the topic or want a class that will fit nicely within your busy schedule.
Wow, I really loved this course. The workload is NOT bad at all and there is an absence of quizzes and tests. There are only essays, which really worked for me as someone who likes writing. Perhaps if you don't, look elsewhere but the writing is not too demanding at all and I felt that my TA graded fairly. Professor Kelley is also brilliant and passionate about what he teaches, which makes the lectures interesting. I found myself super engaged when listening to them, which is great especially considering the online aspect of it.
I am not a history person nor a reading person but I passed this class with an A after almost barely reading the books. This was the only class that required participation during discussion so that felt uncomfortable, but overall Javier (my TA) was extremely knowledgeable and helpful as well.
What really killed me for this class was that Professor Kelley mentioned we will be using one of the book that we read as a final project in the syllabus and on week 9, he completely changed that to a group essay that did not even necessarily need the book. It was tough having one week to come up with a 9 page-ish essay with people you barely or did not even talk to at all during discussion without having enough clarity on what the final prompt wants from us.
However, I still did pass with an A so I guess I have to say this class was easy compared to the work I put in.
This class was super chill. For my TA we really only had to participate in discussion plus the midterm/final papers and some notes we had to take for the book discussion. I spent like no time on this class apart from the readings and got an easy A. Basically my advice would be: participate 2-3 times in discussion, spend some time on the essays and you'll get an A. I didn't have much interaction with Professor Kelley, but he was well organized and very reasonable with the assignments. Good class.
TAKE THIS CLASS. SO EASY. Every week you submit discussion posts on the reading (it is a lot of reading but you only have to mention two of the readings in your post) and its a page double spaced. Even with lightly skimming the reading they took me about an hour and a half if I was really locked in. Everyone gets a 5/5 if you submit it. There are no midterms or final just a final project with your whole discussion section that is also really easy and really easily graded by Prof Kelley. You also do not need to go to lecture by any means because it has nothing to do with your grade, go if you are actually curious about neoliberalism because they are really interesting.
It's an interesting class but you HAVE to go to ALL the lectures and kelley lowkey made the class harder this quarter (two midterms and its an essay now, not small weekly discussion posts) but its not a bad GE its not free though you def have to read and write quite a bit
This is the best class I have ever taken. Professor Kelley is so easy to listen to. The content in this class is important and eye opening. I would absolutely take this course again. There is no midterm, and just a final project that you work on with your section. He presents your project for you during one of the last days of lecture.
I took this class for my history GE, and it is an extremely easy class. I often forgot I was taking it, it was so light. We had 1 hw due a week in response to the reading, then no midterm or final, just a weird group project done by the whole section. I honestly could have stopped going to lecture pretty early in the quarter and been totally fine. It’s more important to do the reading than to go to lecture, because the readings are generally what is discussed in section, although you will be much better at participating in section if you go to lecture. Kelley talks fast and makes it feel urgent, like you need to be paying attention and writing stuff down, but you don’t really need to know any specifics or take notes because there are no tests. The group project was definitely weird but not a huge task, and doing my part took me like 45 min. Participation was required in section, and you will be called on if you don’t speak. The class was objectively interesting but started to feel pretty repetitive pretty quickly. Regardless, I learned something and got an easy A so I would recommend.
