the good: Wohl is a brilliant man. He knows so much I don't think there is much room in his brain for lecturing skills. He is also a genuine lover of people. He cares a ton about student involvement, but never seems to be around. He really knows and loves his subject. the not so good: BORING! There seem to be a lot of differing reviews on this guy. The truth is that he is terribly boring unless you are a genius in the subjects he speaks of. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR A SEMINAR. You do not want to be in his class for 3 hours. He never responds to emails and is highly unavailable. In truth, there are a few simple ways that he could make his lectures more interesting, but he just doesn't do it. I think he has the potential people skills and the brains to be one of the top professors at this school, if only he could put all these things into his lecture form. In short, do not take his class. You can do better in the history department. But having said that, I agree he is absolutely adorable. I'd want him for a grandpa, but not a professor.

This guy has serious probs. Anyway, you are wasting your time taking this class during the summer. I received a good grade in the class but in all honestly Wohl is a total douche. My friends in the course did not do well and they were as hard working as I was. Sucks to be them...

Believe it or not! After you read those bad comments about him, you should truly evaluate your choice to take his class. It will hurt your GPA. I chose not to trust those comments and worked very hard (went to all his lecture and took very detailed notes) but still could not figure out why I could not get an A?! He is very old school and you pretty much have to predict what he wants. His lecture has much information but is very monotone and boring. I have no doubt about his knowledge but he's not a good professor. At the end of the course, ppl asked him what class he will teach so they can avoid him. That's how bad it was.

Well, they either love him or hate him. Truthfully there shouldn't be any controversy over professor Wohl's brilliance or his value as a professor and an educator. Great minds like Wohl's are what make UCLA such a distinguished institution and the chance to learn from such a remarkable person should be taken advantage of. With that said, his lecturing-style could be considered a bit sedate but anyone who claims he is boring is either shallow or immature. I prefer to describe him as a comfortable and composed speaker with a sweet voice whose lectures feel more like a performance than, well, lectures. You get the sense that he has an intuitive understanding of his subjects and that he sincerely cares about conveying that knowledge to his students. In response to a criticism about his habit of introducing "large words" he does so only because such terms (like psychoanalysis) either novel concepts or take on profoundly new meanings in the context of the 20th century. His class is difficult and involves copious amount of reading, but that is par for the course with the History 122 series (if you're considering taking him you've probably assumed as much). I have to contend, however, that 122F was the most difficult of the series. The pace is brisk and the amount of information crammed into the 12 weeks is almost absurd. As mentioned in other posts, Wohl will list a lot of key terms at the beginning of lecture, most of which he will discuss, but rarely does he touch on all of them. It's definitely tough to keep up at times but the subject matter is so interesting you won't even care. This class if for anyone who was a fan of Reill. The major historical figures covered are Sartre, Foucalt, Marcuse, Ortega, Freud, Shaw, Wagner, Darwin, Sartre and much, much more. Nietzche is the first author you will read and his thought, as you will learn, is fundamental to much of what follows it. Existentialism, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, Post-Modernism, Literature of Great Circumstance are some of the interesting subjects that you'll get to explore.

This class was terrible. This is the first C I ever received in a History course. I took very good notes and worked hard on the paper but basically wants you to write a dissertation on World War II history. Please avoid this class. The professor was terrible as well, I've gotten more excited watching paint dry. Avoid this class!
