ART AND ARCHITECTURE 10

Winters offers a lot of extra credit so it is easy to boost your grade a ton. However, he tests on completely random information that comes up throughout his lectures that is completely irrelevant to the class. For example he once asked how he met one of the guest speakers...

We never covered anything having to do with architecture which was my main interest but I ended with a good grade and the extra credit performances at the end were very entertaining.

He is such a cool professor. The midterm and final were not as easy as I had hoped for. Record lectures and take very very very good notes to ensure an A. They test on things said in lecture which can be easily missed. Very specific things sometimes like what on our midterm they asked what order were the drums played in lecture so and so. You don't have to get those kinds of questions right for an A though. Just don't take the tests lightly. Do the extra credit. No brainer. Don't be afraid to go on stage people, everyone is afraid, rise up! Easy class though. No homework.

Pretty enjoyable class but a lot of it is BS. I don't think there needs to be a course on how to talk about art and what it makes you feel

Although I took away some good messages from this class, I feel it was unnecessary and you don't really learn anything

Do the extra credits and go to the review sessions - they help a lot!

Class taken - Arts & Arch 10

This class is soooo chill. You basically show up and watch someone perform their artform. Sometimes there's no presentation though, so you'll have to listen to Winter talk about the history of something or watch some slides. He'll probably repeat the spelling of a buncha words that you'll NEVER need to regurgitate for the exams. But whatever, Winter is not boring and thus this 2 hour lecture feels way shorter.

If you're an athlete, you're in luck because Winter is particularly fond of athletes. He offers the athletes exclusive review sessions for when they miss lecture because they have to play.

The discussions are not very useful, but you'll still have to go because it's part of your grade. I'm pretty sure nothing your TA teaches you will be tested, because each TA teaches something different.

You'll have to write 4 short papers on some performing arts shows you've attended. So you'll probably have to spend $60 on tickets. But there's no textbook, so it kinda cancels out. Anyway, this class is alright.

Took him my first quarter of UCLA.
Almost three years later, his class is still one of the best I've taken here. Inspirational and made me excited for UCLA. Class presentations were fun, and It was great going to outside performances. Thanks to the class, I really do appreciate the arts. I may even sit on some lectures in the fall. Make sure to do the extra credit though!

Worst professor I've had at UCLA. Robert Winter's A&A10 is an incredibly easy but completely pointless class- extremely difficult to sit through for an hour and fifty minutes. In addition to praising the obnoxious majority of athletes in class, Winter spends a good amount of the class making long-winded speeches not related to class material- don't be fooled by his complaints of a meager teacher's salary, Winter makes $190,000 from teaching alone. More ridiculous than Winter himself is his group of TA's who often don't speak English well or know nothing besides their specific musical area. A large part of the grade is Midterm and Final, which take any word out of the professor's mouth from the entire quarter as essential course material. If you want to do well, attend the athlete reviews, where Winter gives all of the answers to his beloved football players and soccer girls. Some people came out of the class with arbitrary A+, while others who had attended every lecture received B's or C's.

Easiest GE ever. Enjoyable class that will make you enjoy art and see things from a new perspective. Getting an A+ is not difficult especially taking into account all of the extra credit opportunity out there. Definitely one of my fav classes.

This was an extremely enjoyable class. The trick is to take detailed notes during the lectures and make sure you pay attention to the performances (sometimes even what seems to be very unimportant may pop up on the tests). It's necessary to go to every lecture and listen attentively throughout the lecture. As long as you do that, this class is very easy, no stress whatsoever (especially with the extra credits!) This is a wonderful GE class, I recommend you take it! I loved it and all of my friends did too. Goodluck! Professor Winter is hilarious!

Today was our final, and it was much easier than I expected. The only thing about this class is that if you miss a lecture, you're screwed for that day (unless you have a good friend who will share their notes with you). Some of his multiple choice are a little tricky, but there is usually one very obvious answer that is the "most right". Attendance is taken in discussion, so make sure you choose a time/day when you will actually go. GO TO AT LEAST ONE REVIEW SESSION. He really likes athletes, so if he offers them a review session, try to sneak in. The online readings are sometimes long/boring, but you should at least skim through and try to find the key points. This class is pretty easy for a GE; the only setback is that you have to go to class everyday. There are also a lot of extra credit opportunities, like volunteering in class and stuff.

TAKE THIS CLASS WITH WINTER!

These negative reviews are just WRONG. There is zero homework in the class except five 2-page performance reviews you have at the end. I suppose the performances themselves count as homework, but they themselves are very enjoyable to watch (and this is coming from a science guy who lacks appreciation for the arts).

The midterm was SUPER easy. You just have to go to class to be ready for the midterm. It's true, he puts small details in the exam, but they are very fair. If you go to class, you will get those small details. The questions on the readings are FREE POINTS. The reading questions are extremely basic, so if you just read quickly before the midterm, you will get them all. And I'm not suggesting this, but it's also extremely easy to copy during the test. You sit right next to one another, and there are times when the whole class is laughing at how easy/funny a question is, and the TA's simply warn you if you look at someone's paper, not take it away.

What's best is that he THROWS out extra credit like it's nothing. If you go on stage five times, you get one grade bump (e.g. B to B+); if you do a student presentation in the 9th and 10th weeks you get another; he actually is giving everyone a FREE grade bump because he was impressed with our performance on one tiny assignment we had earlier (don't worry, it wasn't really homework); plus the top 50 rated people on that assignment get another grade bump.

You heard me right, that's FOUR grade bumps. You can go from a B to an A if you do all of that. The presentation and on-stage EC are fixed, so you can get at least two per quarter if you do them (we got lucky and had 4 opportunities, with one being free).

The final is next week, and I'm ready to take it. He always has review session that help out a lot before the midterm/final. You need to go to them to do better.

20% of the grade is participation. Go to every discussion and talk a little. 20% is papers that are very easy to write.

So yea, take this class.
