Professor M’Closkey is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and seems like he enjoys teaching. He transitioned to remote teaching pretty well and he definitely improved the quality of his instruction as the quarter went on. At first it was a little confusing because he teaches you concepts that you don’t see being applied, but these are applied in the second half of the class. I would say the labs are pretty easy but the homeworks were quite hard. He doesn’t curve his class, but he’s very helpful during office hours. He also records his lectures (during virtual instruction) but I would recommend actually attending them because he does make mistakes that he corrects during the live lectures. During live lectures he plays his recordings and makes comments here and there. The midterm was pretty easy (median was ~85%) but his final had a lower median (I think it was around ~70%) and since the class wasn’t curved I imagine his grade distribution wasn’t wonderful. But overall, taking 107 with MCloskey was a good experience.

Professor Mcloskey was very good at control !

This class was hard and heavy load, specially with Mcloskey but his lecture is effective.

I was not supposed to get an A in the class but he gave it to me because he liked me! That helps !

Go to his office hours and show him respect and your care to learn the class and he will raise your grade !

Loved taking 107 with him. Probably the most difficult class I have taken material wise but he was amazing at explaining everything and giving you all the concepts you need. He makes his own hw and they were long and hard. The labs were all really quick and once you do one or two on frequency responses and fourier transforms they don't take long at all. The midterm and final were tough but doable. He gave 24 hours for midterm and only 3 or 4 for the final which had a hand in dropping the average quite a bit. I liked him so much I decided to take 172 with him but your mileage may vary depending on how much you like the math side of things.

This class was objectively the hardest class I have taken in the MAE department. However, M'Closkey was a phenomenal lecturer, and I would probably put 107 in my top five favourite classes. He was able to distill the most complex concepts down to very digestible pieces. Lectures were very engaging and teach you 60-70% of the material you need to know for the homework assignments and exams. The course does not require a textbook, but M'Closkey posted PDF files of his lecture notes which were informative. The class was extremely math heavy (as expected from a systems class), so you'll need a solid grasp on how to take derivatives, integrals (and its associated methods like u-substitution and integration by parts), partial fraction decomposition, infinite series, and Laplace transforms. On top of that, MATLAB was used extensively - every lab facilitated MATLAB for data processing and plotting problems in homework relied heavily on it. The grading breakdown was 15% HW, 15% Lab, 30% Midterm, and 40% Final. The labs were relatively straightforward, and all of the data as well as most of the post-processing could be completed within the two-hour session. Make sure to check your graphs with your TA or you'll likely get dinged for easy points. Homework was extremely difficult and time-consuming. I went to the TAs' office hours every week to be able to complete them, since sometimes I wouldn't even know where to start with a problem. However, they were informative and helped to fill in many of the holes that were not covered during lectures. They were also relevant to exam content, and I attribute my success on the midterm and final to seriously treating and fully understanding the homework. Speaking of which, both exams were definitely fair, but the midterm was significantly harder than the final (50% average and 70% average, respectively). I think the reason was because the midterm was far too long to be completed in a 2-hour time frame, whereas the final had more reasonable timing. I'm pretty sure the final grades were curved, though. Overall, I highly recommend you take 107 with M'Closkey. It is certainly a difficult class, and you will need to devote a significant amount of time to it, by I promise it will be worth it!

The class was weighted 10 HW, 10 Lab, 40 Midterm, 40 Final. The HWs in this class were very difficult and time consuming. I had to go to office hours every week in order to complete them. He writes his own homework so the answers are not on chegg. The Lab work was easy and there were never any reports due outside of class, everything was finished and turned in within the 1 hour and 50 minutes of lab time. His tests were rough and needed you to really master the material. Both the midterm and final were open book/open note. On the first midterm, there were only 3 questions and 2 of them were all or nothing no partial credit. The book was completely useless except for containing an extensive list of Laplace transforms. To succeed in this class I would recommend studying his slides extensively. Also brush up on your MATLAB skills because each homework required you to graph Frequency response functions, impulse responses, our find Fourier series. Good luck!

I had a very positive experience with Professor M'Closkey in MAE 107. The material is quite challenging but the way Professor M'Closkey presents the material makes it fairly understandable to us. Workload is fairly heavy, but generally the homework and lab instructions are very clear in what they want so it's not too bad. Though most of the class grade depends on exams, and they're not exactly easy, but he is pretty generous about partial credit.

Professor M'Closkey is a very clear professor when it comes to explaining MAE 107 concepts. Granted he is on of the hardest professors for this class and gives the most work, I feel like I learned a great deal from this class. His homework is well written and he usually steps you through the problem to help you with the thought process. However, sometimes there is too much homework and that is when things can get a little overwhelming. However, the homework is very good practice for his exams and helps reinforce course material.

As for his midterm, the midterm was hit or miss. He had 4 problems, 2 of them being multiple choice which was about half the exam. If you chose the wrong answer, there was no partial credit for the MCs. I did above average on the midterm. As for the final, it was again 4 problems, but no multiple choice. It was long, and you have to know what you're doing to finish on time. I thought I did bad on the final, but ended up with a B+ in his class and I am completely satisfied. I feel like I have a strong grasp on the material since Professor M'Closkey is such an effective teacher.

Just be prepared to work hard if you have him. This was by far the most time consuming class I have taken in the MAE department, considering I only have a few more classes to take left.

His lectures were thorough and his tests/homework are really hard. If you don't understand the material really well, you're not going to get an A. He also treats you like you should have no problem understanding the material. Which turned me off of seeking help outside of class.

If you can avoid taking him, I suggest you do.
