Reading the reviews posted on here before I expected a hellish professor but I have to say the people that wrote about him are crazy. Is the class hard? Yes. Is there a lot of material? Yes. But I liked him a as a lecturer. I found him funny. I even liked learning about the sewage cycle. I don't know why people are berating him about the things he seems to enjoy teaching because his enthusiasm made the potentially dry material actually interesting to me. And I couldn't disagree more with those saying he doesn't seem to care about his students. He even brought in food one day for us to eat and chill out while he discussed fermentation. He may not be the vivacious lecturer, but give him a break, he's old and he's trying his best. I enjoyed this class and him teaching it, and even developed an interest in MIMG because of this class.

He's a pretty mediocre professor. Not bad by any definition of the word, but he gets overshadowed by Professor Bradley, whom he teaches with and who is much more charismatic than he is.

Dr. Gunsalus is a good professor who outlines exactly what you need to know on the exams. He gives exam questions pretty much completely based on memorization of the aforementioned outline. I liked him; in office hours he was incredibly helpful. Still, I found that watching Bruincast at 1.5-2x speed was a little more engaging than going to class because he is a bit monotonous. Overall, MIMG 101 isn't a crazy difficult class, is curved a couple percent, and the professors are really helpful. The final isn't cumulative when Bradley+Gunsalus teach, also!

Gunsalus is a bit of a drag. He's just an old man who seems like he's only teaching because he kinda has to. His own personal research is on the carbon cycle, so he LOVES to test over the biogeochemical cycles in the exams, which may not be as heavily covered if you were to take this class with another professor. And honestly, learning about sewer sludge extensively is B.O.R.I.N.G. But he loves it.
He's a pretty dry lecturer and just reads off the slides honestly. But he's really nice when you go to office hours and isn't intimidating or rude at all. So in that regard I liked him. But if I could take the class again with a different professor, I DEFINITELY would.

Worst lecturer. Voice is blabbery and annoying to the ears. Incoherent sentences that are often fragmented and grammatically BIZARRE. How is this guy even a professor?

Gunsalus is, like everyone else sais, the most boring professor I have ever had. He talks on and on and on about nothing, spends half of the lecture time to talk about one slide that's not even important. Sometimes I didn't go to lectures and had to listen to the bruincast thing, and it was literally a torture to listen to his lecture.

Gunsalus is sleep-inducing. He co-lectured with (Peter) Bradley, who was far more interesting, and covered much more interesting material. Gunsalus also tends to make his portion of the exams a lot more memorization-based than Bradley. But overall, he's about as exciting as 52-card pickup.

I've only had gunsalus for two weeks so far, but here's my impression. I feel like he only does this class because he has to and he does the minimum on his lectures. Any chance he has, he defers questions to the TA or to Bradley. I feel like he has no motivation whatsoever to actually be there for students, and I'm disappointed Bradley isn't doing more of the class. Gunsalus skims over so much information on his slides because he just doesn't want to take the time to explain it. I feel stupider ever class because I see graphs and I'm just told over and over I dont need to know what this means or what this means. And it leaves me wondering, just what am I here to know then? He's a nice man but I definitely have the impression he'd rather be anywhere else and he just comes to lecture to get by and leave.

mimg 101 has probably been my favorite bio class here at ucla. Despite what others believe about dr. Gunsalus I felt he was a wonderful teacher. When I took this class it was also co-taught by dr. Bradley and I liked both of the professors. I felt that on the tests Bradley\355s portion was a lil more tough than Gunsalus. Gunsalus doesn\355t trick you on the test, the questions are very straightforward from the powerpoint slides. It is true that he mumbles quite a lot during lecture and even though I sat in front of the class, everyday, I still had a hard time hearing him. I don\355t think Dr. Gunsalus means to not go to his OH but he is such a busy man, like most of the other professors at UCLA, he forgets. Most of the time he may not show up at the OH room but he is just next door in his office. I took this class while I was taking 3 other classes which I\355ll probably never do again but I still managed to pull an A off. Frankly, this class wasn\355t even hard to me. All you have to do is go over the lecture slides like 5-7 times before the test and make sure you ask your TA on stuff you don\355t understand. Don\355t even bother buying the book I never even used it. I guess the only thing tricky in this class is that both the professors like the students to see the overall picture, to relate concepts from one lecture to a different lecture. So it isn\355t just about memorization it\355s about understanding the concepts.

Dr. Gunsalus would be better suited reading stories at nap time to 5 year olds. He has the most monotone voice that puts the whole class to sleep and he stands in the same spot during the entire lecture. It was a struggle to stay awake, not that staying awake helped any. The tests are straight from the powerpoint slides, which are easy to understand on their own, if you do take this class with Gunsalus, stay home and sleep in and just print out the lecture slides from the web and if you have any questions consult the book or your t.a.
