I got at least 3 or 4 past Brown midterms or finals before each midterm and final in this class and the ones I took with Brown this year (10F 11W) have been much much harder. He does recycle the type of problems but just makes them a lot harder or puts them together somehow. It isnt impossible though, I studied for 3 weeks straight for the final and got a B on it. I rarely went to lecture because he would spend most of the time doing proofs, and would end his lectures halfway through sections and also he would teach you the material with the hardest example of that problem he could come up with instead of showing us easier ones and progressing from there. I used the site patrickjmt to teach me all about series and other info I wasnt sure about and I was familiar with the material from taking AP Calc BC in high school. Also study your ass off for the final because its 50 percent and by far the hardest test. I learned that the hard way by going from a solid A to a C+ from the final in 31A.

I had Professor Brown for 31A and 31B. He is an adorable old man, not intimidating, and really really willing to help you. His lectures are a little bit all over the place with minor errors and can be uninteresting at times, but I thought they were important. I struggled in 31A and worked very hard to earn a B. In 31B, I was able to get an A after understanding better how the class "works."

The TA sections are important. Quizzes are given out every week and it really helps to do the homework. The question is always a homework one and getting the 10 points is simply a matter of doing the problems and doing it again on the day of discussion- should be easy points, just remember to do them!

As for the exams, there are two midterms and one final. The final is worth a sizable chunk of your grade and so are the midterms. The midterms are five questions and are very concept oriented. There is a time crunch. He will always throw one in, as I've heard him say, that you may have not necessarily "seen" before but should be able to figure out if you really understand concepts. He is not the type of professor that is out to get you, so remember that when taking your exams. Be sure to go over examples from class and practice extra homework type of problems if you want an A. Exposure to different problems really really helps!

For the final, you have lots of time so just be careful. It is 10 problems. The final is usually not as hard because of this (at least for me) but you can get really tired and weary by the end of it. The material covered should be mostly the stuff he teaches after the second midterm, so focus on this, but do review everything.

I think what made the difference for me to get the A the second time with Brown was not only a good idea of how his class was set up having taken 31 A, but also Covel tutoring and a solid TA. Ngoc Lee was my TA for 31B and even though he was hard to understand at times, he knows his stuff and is really great at explaining things. Covel tutoring-if you can sign up for this do! I had Paul Dareai(?) and he was great as well. It was helpful just having an extra hour of "math" a week, just to be thinking about math period. You get a lot of interaction with fellow students and figure out problems together.

Do not hesitate to go talk to Brown at all. After every exam, he offers students to go talk to him about the test and how they are doing in class. This is a great opportunity to go in and look over the test with him because I guarantee you he is very sweet and will definitely help you understand your mistakes so not to make them again, and there's a good chance he will raise your score, seriously.

So sorry this was long but basically, do your homework to ensure you don't lose easy points there, be calm on the midterms and make sure you really understand the main concepts and their applications, and practice lots of problems for all the exams. It was lots of work but well worth it.

I personally really like Brown as a professor. If you go to his office hours, he really tries to help you understand the material. Weekly quizzes are from homework problems, so that's easy. Just study hard for the mid-term and make sure you ask him for help if you don't understand anything. He is super nice about everything.
