Professor Mare is an excellent professor. He is very intelligent and knows a lot on the topic of inequality. The class is very structured and fair. This may not appeal to everyone's learning styles but you can learn a lot from this class from paying attention and reading the excellent reading material he assigns. I did not think this course was statistically based at all and that would be an unfair description. Yes, he evokes statistics to sometimes explain a graph or idea, but it is never required that you understand this to do well in the class. He just tries to enhance the information through substantial quantitative research. He is very nice and open to speaking to you. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. I appreciate a Professor that takes his profession so seriously.
i am actually in his 157 class and although it started off a bit boring, his lectures are quite interesting. He is a very fair grader and the reading he gives us to do are mainly ethnography which is way better than reading weber and marx all day :) He is always available to talk and is very interested in what students have to say. Although the only down fall with this class is that you may not be able to ask questions or comment during his lectures as he never gives you that opportunity. Overall, nice class, not easy but not terribly hard...and try to take tara as your ta, she is super sweet and helps you write the papers when your stuck.
