This class is mislabed, it is actually called: Science of Language.
This class is awesome, it consists of weekly quizzes, 2 labs, and a final project.
Professor Dale is probably the only good comm professor at UCLA. He is hilarious, kind, very helpful, quick at emails, and always wanting to see his students succeed. This is my third class with him. Take him, you will not regret it.
I really can’t say enough good things about Professor Dale. He was so kind, and so understanding about taking the class online during COVID-19 and made every effort possible to reduce our stress. The class consisted of online quizzes which he took the best 5 out of 7, one lab (he reduced the requirement from 2) and a final project. He ultimately made the final project optional because of the current situation with the protests, but it was just an extension of one of the labs and he was super flexible about the topic we chose because he really wanted us to pick a topic that was relevant to us and our career interests. His lectures were pretty engaging even for someone like me who isn’t super into this area of comm, and he recorded them in advance so we could watch them on our own time. I would highly recommended taking a class with Dale if you can, he’s probably the best professor I’ve had at UCLA.
Professor Dale is an absolute gem. I've never met a more caring teacher and even though the quarter was online he still managed to connect with his students in such personable ways. The class consists of 7 quizzes (very easy), 2 labs (also very easy and you can pick from 5 different ones), and a final project (4 pages) which expands on one of the previous labs. He wants his students to succeed and is very accessible for questions or concerns. Very chill grader and overall just a kind hearted individual. Please take this class with him if you can! You will not regret it. I wasn't very interested in the material, but it was so manageable and he tries to make it as engaging as possible. I wish all professors were like Dale. He even extended the deadline on our final project b/c he knew we were all going through tough times. I love this man and you will too!
Please keep in mind that I took this class during the COVID-19 pandemic, so everything was online. Professor Dale is absolutely incredible. Dale is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had and I truly wish I was able to have taken this course in person. Lectures were all pre-recorded and you could watch it on your own time. There was a very simple, short quiz every week from weeks 1 to 7, and he only took the 6 highest scores. There were readings given every week and professor goes over all of them pretty thoroughly in his lectures. You have to do only 2 labs of your choice (from the 5 options he gives), and all the labs are super easy and will not take a lot of time. There is also a final project that's around 4 pages double-spaced, and is also very do-able. Watch the lectures and put in some effort in your assignments and you will get an A. Professor is so willing to help and always is inviting students to come to his office hours for help, or even just to chat with him about things. I highly recommend this course and Professor Dale!
Professor Dale is one of my favorite professors I've had at UCLA so far. Even though I wasn't extremely interested in the class when registering for it, his passion and enthusiasm when teaching the subject made my learning an enjoyable experience.
I loved the way this class was set up. Students have up to two weeks to complete each weekly quiz. Out of the five or so labs that were given, you only have to complete two of them for credit. On top of that, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to what to write about in your labs, which I also really liked. No midterm or final exam. Instead, you write a final paper at the end of the quarter. Also, lectures are asynchronous.
I came into the class just aiming to fulfill my degree requirements and then came out of it learning some pretty interesting stuff. Highly recommend taking this class!
This class has a light workload and Professor Dale is super nice and accommodating. I recommend this class for students looking for an easy comm upper div. There are 7 open note quizzes, 2 labs, and a final project. The lectures are semi-interesting but pretty easy to understand, and the readings are not very long. During covid, there were asynchronous lectures so you never interacted with students or the professor. You end up learning some interesting stuff about language use and practical tools to measure it. If nothing else, Professor Dale is great and really cares about his work.
Loved this class! Took it along with the Comm 131 class that he was teaching as well, and I loved both. Professor Dale responded to questions in a timely manner, and it was obvious that he wanted all of his students to do well. Take this class!
Considering I did not have any coding or computer science experience before this class, I was nervous to take it. That being said, Professor Dale made this class very enjoyable and manageable. This class was comprised of two lab assignments, almost weekly quizzes, and a final project that is pretty open-ended.
