Rich Rose is my absolute fave! He’s so funny, I don’t even care about set designing and I loved this class! If you put in the work you’ll get an A and he’s super understanding you can hit him up with any question and he’s so happy to help. Genuinely wants everyone to learn and enjoy the class, all the assignments are super clear and broken down in chunks so very manageable. The discussion sections were well organized and super helpful as well. Wonderful person wonderful class.

I loved this class. At first, I thought I was going to absolutely loathe it, but it ended up being my favorite class out of the entire freshman experience. Rich Rose does teach you how to draw, which was a big deal for me because I used to suck at drawing. Now, I have the artistic sight he talks about in class. Essentially, the class is run like a lecture class where we literally had to get tables and chairs set up in 1350 and take them down at the end of class. At the start of the class, Rich will ask if you have any questions. For the next twenty minutes, you learn about this man's work and his passion for art and there's always meme moments which helps you ease into the lecture that occurs for the second half of class. Each lecture consists of different aspects of line, color theory, left-brain/right-brain, and many more aspects of set design. Some classes, there are no lectures at all and we just draw. You will need to have a sketchbook and some 6b pencils with an eraser to do this class. Every week we had to do two "sketch diaries" of a given prompt and turn it in the following the following week. Basically, you draw the negative space of an object and hope it looks good enough for a good grade. Your midterm is probably the easiest midterm you will ever take at UCLA. Your midterm project is a little trickier though because you have to read a play and then sketch your set design for the play. This actually requires a lot of research and creativity because you go into his office in groups of three where he critiques the work for your final. Your final is the midterm set design according to his critiques with shading. This took me like two days to do which is because I'm a slow drawer, but you feel proud after if you took it seriously. Also, lab classes are a pain because it's just labor for the upperclassmen's sets that we don't even get to be apart of. That's something TFT doesn't tell you. You have six hours of labor at least per week in a different aspect of theater and it is exhausting. Overall, the class itself is amazing, but the lab classes are bleh. There's no way out of it though so good luck and try to forget about your life while it occurs.

R is an awesome guy. Having a chat with him outside of class, which is realyl easy to do, is always a good time. He runs his classes with a lot of interaction and there is hardly ever a dull moment. Don't ask idiotic questions, cause not only will he make fun of the question, but that's lame anyhow.
