He is an awesome professor! One of the best I have had at UCLA. He is very knowledgable. You need to attend lectures because he takes roll and you need to do all the readings. Don't expect him to give you the "A" if you're Armenian. You need to put the effort if you want the A. Like I said he is a really incredible teacher and makes learning history enjoyable.

This class requires a lot of reading which would not be so difficult if the book had a concrete structure. The chapters that are written by Hovannisian are all over the place. He puts so much information and so many facts but at the same time he forgets to explain them. Sometimes he talks about different dates in the same paragraph and makes it hard to follow the reading. The book is very dense and covers a lot of material. Take a lot of notes during lecture. He goes back and forth between events and this can make the lectures more and more confusing. You have a midterm and a final and a book summary. The book summary is about the book that his grandson wrote. It's not the best book. It has a series of disjointed thoughts and ideas and can improve a lot in structure. It seems as though his grandson was thinking while as he was writing the book. The midterm and final are not too bad. Just make sure to write a great essay. He tests you in an I.D. format so be sure to have a clear essay and a clear thesis. he gives study guides so be sure to go over those and write out the essays and memorize them. He knows a lot of info and is educated but when it comes to lecturing, I can say that there are better professors. Yes he knows his stuff, but he does not know how to articulate that so you can follow his lecture. He may be rude and blunt at times but he is nice guy.

Hovannisian is the leading authority on Armenian History. Taking a class with him is the equivalent of taking a chemistry class with a Nobel Prize winner--It's going to be tough. He is totally worth it though. The man has an incredible memory and sense of humor. I think everyone should take a class with him, but be prepared to know a lot of names and understand events that are definitely not as simpple as U.S. History.

HONORS COLLEGIUM 2: Class requires some effort but it's worth it. There are 3 4-5 page papers and a final 10-12 page paper. Regardless of all the work, this class is by far one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA. An A is completely doable. SIDE NOTE: Selling the required books for a reasonable price. I took Professor Hovannisian for Comparative Genocides. He is an amazing professor! Always concerned about his students and really engages everyone to participate in his class. You definitely have to show diligence in his class to get an A. Do all the readings, yes, they are a lot but interesting enough. Asking questions and participating in his class are key, so attending every class in sitting like a log isn't an option. =)
