Kaner's "effectiveness" is way overrated. I don't think he's a good teacher in any way. Maybe people think he's good because of all those silly models and boring demos. He doesn't explain very well, and tests on really random stuff.
This is the best chemistry professor I have ever had at UCLA. I loved his class, and if you don't like chemistry, he'll make it very interesting and fun to learn it. The class is just moderately difficult, not too bad if you study for it. But he really cares about you learning the material, and is not out to get you or anything. Take him if you can and you will enjoy it for sure.
Professor Kaner's class was one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever taken at UCLA. He is very knowledgeable in what he teaches and applies his lectures to the many faucets of chemistry in our everyday lives. He is very relaxed and very approachable. He does throw out a lot of information during his lectures so write fast or bring a tape recorder. The book is simply a reference to the lecture (and much less interesting!) and most test material is in the lecture. In addition, attending discussion sections really help out a lot. Omar and Julia are GREAT!!! Good Luck and enjoy the class!
it's amazing how patient Prof. Kaner is! he stays well past his scheduled office hours until your questions are answered! his lectures tend to go fast so office hours are extremely helpful! you learn so much from office hours, so much so that i went to exams as is, without having to study too much. everything on his exams, he already talked about in class, so his tests are really direct and straightforward, no tricks. his demos and models are also very helpful. finally, all of the ta's we had were knowledgable so we had help from all aspects. it was a great class all around. learn how to make diamonds and other gems!!
The man is a genus at relating complex topics to students and enjoys working with students who want to learn. The Chem 171 course was taught slowly and thoroughly and structured around core concepts taught throughout the class. With Professor Kaner as the lecturer you will never want to miss class and will leave you wanting more. If you can, take a class with him, you won't be disappointed.
Kaner is one of the best professors I've had to date...similar to professor Rogawski in the math department in many respects. Unbelievably patient, and willing to explain things repeatedly. He does a good job of simplifying concepts down. He regales us with stories of his own experiences in chemistry, which can be rather amusing. As far as I know, Chem 171 will always be taught by Kaner, so you'll probably have to take him, but you'll enjoy it.
He turned my first quarter at UCLA into the most memorable moment ever. He is undoubtedly a very knowledgeable professor. This is proved by his very simple and brief explanation of the most complicated concepts of inorganic chemistry. It is absolutely incredible! It is extraordinary! He unbelievably turns complexity into simplicity. This is what I like the most about him. If you are considering or are interested in taking a chemistry class, I highly recommend him. He is the best teacher ever...He is very caring and dedicated in teaching. He definitely has high concern about student's learning. He will devote his time to answer tons of questions during office hours and after lectures. He makes inorganic chemistry so interesting. I guarantee you would have an unforgettable and rich experience in your learning after you had him. Trust me...do not leave UCLA before you take him!
Fall 2001 was my first quarter in UCLA after SMC college, i'd never say that the class was easy, there is a vast amount of information, always exceptions and always something more advanced that we shouldn't think about which confuses even more. However, Prof. Kaner is excellent at this course, knowing the subject he makes it easy just as first quarter Inorganic Chemistry. TA Robert is awsome, i wish i had him for all my classes.
He is the best Chem professor I have taken at UCLA and most of my colleagues agree. He makes the chem so interesting...i never sat in on one boring lecture or ever fell asleep (okay, maybe once, i had just ate). but the point is you will never see another professor who makes chem so fun and easy to learn the way kaner does. In addition, his availability is ridiculous. After every lecture, he would be available for almost an hour extra to handle any questions one may have. Absolutely amazing...truly driven to have us learn and appreciate what he teaches. I have nothing bad to say about this man, except that i wish he had time to explain stuff to us on a deeper level, but he's constrained due to the amount of info he covers. He is a real nice guy and won't quit till you understand stuff. Attendance to lecture is a must, so do not miss lectures at all...that's where exam questions come from. He's absolutely amazing and i just love the dude. He makes the material straightforward and easy to grasp...a great guy. Take the man if you can, its called Intermediate Inorganic Chemistry....i d take him again if i could...
