Professor Creese is nice but he gave the entire class a horrible grade for first paper. (D- to C ) This discouraged the hell out of all classmates and made the mood of the class extremely tense and sad. Then he told the class about the option to write a "rewrite" which everyone did not enjoy.

His class was not an easy A. Go to his office hours. He will be helpful and talk you through what you're missing. But if you don't go to his office hours and just write using your opinions regarding SBC, he will not give you a good grade period.

However, he does give you a "satisfactory" grade back once you rewrite and prove him that you're putting effort in. Overall fair professor but would not recommend him for Eng Comp 3 if you're looking for an "easy A".

Not a guaranteed A but an easy, enjoyable class to take.

Screwball comedy movies are fun to watch, and you basically spend all your classes doing that.

I'm a fairly decent writer and got an A, B+, A- and ended up with an A-. Rewriting my second paper wouldn't have helped me at all apparently. The final paper determines most of your grade. He takes time to go through your paper, which is really great, but my problem (and other students whom I've talked with share the same concern) is that when he says it's a fine paper and there are no more corrections needed, he doesn't mean an A. In fact, he told me that there were no guarantees but he didn't see why my paper couldn't get an A, and still gave me an A-. I'm definitely confused over this detail. He grades a lot harder than I expected from all these reviews on Bruinwalk, and I don't know what my classmates got if I got an A-. Our peer reviews showed that if I'm getting A-s, they must be getting at best Cs. What kind of sentence is "she is the feisty screwball heroine, like a sexy gun with a bang"?!

I diverge.

His teaching style is great. He's funny. Would definitely recommend him again. Just be warned - these reviews talk him up too much. When he says you have an A, don't expect an A or you'll be let down pretty hard like me.

You know a professor who is greatly enthusiastic of screwball comedy (SBC) and student's learning after you meet Professor Creese. Unlike some other UCLA professors, Prof. Creese is genuinely caring and will give you thorough feedback of your papers when you utilized his office hours. I was originally apprehensive about taking English, especially since I'm a Physics major who has never taken AP English and got B's in English from 10th grade and on. Yet, I found Professor Creese's course quite fascinating. Lecture was mainly either watching SBC or clips of a handful of other films influenced of has been influenced by SBC. During lectures, he'd usually stop the film and adds in his analysis. (A smart student should have a laptop at hand and type up the important points Prof. Creese has to say every time he stops the film.) His analysis definitely sheds light on possible ideas for the 3 short papers he assigns. On the 1st 2 essays, I received a B+. He typically allows 1 rewrite but students can rewrite both papers. I was quite surprised at the various levels of writing present in the class. Likewise, I found that the hardest assignments for the class were peer edits as opposed to the essays, if you do a thorough job in editing other people's work. For the final essay, I wasn't able to finish the paper in time. (I was suffering from a mental breakdown, having slept in a physics computer lab for about 2.5 weeks w/o returning to the dorms just to avoid people who made me hate my life for a while. This was in addition to family being mildly affected by the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear situation that happened a few days earlier.) So, I ended up e-mailing Professor Creese asking for an extension. He was very very kind. He gave me a 2 day extension to finish up my paper, in addition to expressing concern of my situation. (I didn't originally mention the situation but I found it truly amazing for the amount of concern he expressed.) :) Definitely an amazing professor. If I had a chance to take Professor Creese again, I definitely would!

I enjoyed Professor Creese's class very much. Winter 2010 quarter was slightly different than previous quarters due to budget cuts and the increased number of students in the class. We spent most of our class time watching films. Other students have mentioned discussion about readings, but our class didn't do much of that. He would start the class with a brief analysis about the films and sometimes incorporate the readings. I would jot down notes during this time, which was really helpful, because most likely it would be one of the paper topics.

He was a lenient grader and absolutely loves screwball comedies. Absolutely try to meet up with him for your rewrites and final paper! For my first paper I got a 80. I took the advice he wrote on the paper and I got a 96 on my rewrite. As for the final paper, I went to office hour several times and he really tries to help you. Just make sure you have some idea and he can really help you expand on that idea. The final paper which is 8-10 pages long isn't as hard as it sounds because you're basically expanding on previous papers. He is easy to talk to and really willing to help.

Oh as for the textbooks, I'd say it's fine if you just borrow the books because, I basically skimmed through them for quotes. I looked only for key words when I needed a quote in my paper, so I didn't read the entire books. I know the Kyvig book can be found in local libraries, and several UC and CSU campuses have the Gehring book. So if you know people from other campuses you can save money from just asking them to borrow it for you.

Surprisingly, I found the black and white movies quite entertaining. I would definitely recommend his class.

I'm a math major and was not looking forward to taking English Comp 3 at all, but I really enjoyed Professor Creese's class. We would watch screwball comedies from the 1930's, supplemented with a little bit of reading outside of class, and then analyze them in class discussions. The readings felt a little irrelevant at first, but as the course went on, I got more into the subject and now I can appreciate films from that time and have a little bit of knowledge about them.

He's a fair grader and gives you the opportunity to rewrite papers for a better grade. Just make sure to participate in the discussions as much as possible.
