The workload for this class is very heavy with multiple dense readings assigned, however, if you enjoy the material and topic, it can be manageable. Professor Macias is a very understanding professor and genuinely cares about his students and learning, so even if you are struggling don't be afraid to talk to him about it! The class consists of attendance, participation, a midterm, a book review of a book of your choice, and a final data collection project related to the class themes - plus extra credit opportunities!

Professor Macias is a great teacher who really cares about the well-being of his students and is open to comments/criticisms. However, this class is a heavy workload in terms of the assigned readings. At the beginning of the quarter it might not seem like much but as you continue and the workload for other classes begins to pile on you might begin to fall behind in this class. Beware, some readings tend to be dense and long and sometimes most of the readings assigned overlap with the same information previously read so it was like you were rereading stuff when he could've just assigned a portion of the article. So its best to skim the readings and discern what you already know and focus on the new information the readings give you.
The professor's lectures consist more of oral conversation as he rarely had slides or visual aids, so if this is your style of learning great! Professor Macias is very knowledgeable but there are times during his lectures where you can feel lost and confused if you're not actively listening.
I am used to reading and following a heavy schedule and workload, but this class was very hard for me. But I was very interested in the content so it was worthwhile for me. However, if you don't HAVE to take this class, save yourself the stress.
The grading consists of:
attendance
participation
take home midterm and final
book report on a book of your choosing
and extra credit opportunities he offers

Also the books are kind of pricey, but they're necessary for the course as you will need them for the midterm, final, and book report.

I took Macias for Chic 179 and he knows his stuff! He is very informative and helpful to his students. Sure at times he may be intimidating but the man teaches well. He does give a lot of reading but it is manageable. I did find myself feeling bored most of the time but I mean if you like the material you might not be. He had us do a data collection project which I suggest you work on from the beginning of the quarter or you'll find yourself overwhelmed like I did. Its not that bad but I waited until the weekend before to start it, not a good idea...haha! overall this man is a great proffesor!
