Great professor but just a bad class overall. Such a nice guy but no one wants to write this many papers in a quarter. Also the topic was ancient art. If you are into that great, if not you'll hate writing about it.

Ultimately my opinion of the class will probably be very biased considering English is one of my least favorite subjects. I didn't enjoy it as much as probably other students did. HOWEVER, I will say that Professor Wilson was a very reasonable and helpful teacher. His essays prompts were a bit difficult and abstract, but Professor Wilson would be understanding of your own ideas for your paper and would help lead you in the right direction. For the first time ever I felt that my voice as a writer was valued. This is probably the best English class to take if you want to satisfy your Writing 1 requirement.

I took English Comp 3 with Professor Wilson. I was constantly revising my essays in an effort to do well, his class is very engaging and he's a very cool guy. I really enjoyed going and it had an easy going vibe to it. The essay due dates weren't specified to a certain date, they were all drafts until the final ones were do (BUT HE GRADED US ON DRAFTS- I had no idea about this otherwise I would've revised them better before submitting them). In this class, it is focused on a dude named John Berger who is an critic, writer, performer... etc. The first essay you write is about an image from a certain time period (1500+) and then you write it in a tasteful manner in which John Berger would see it after watching a series in class called Ways of Seeing by John Berger (This is on Youtube). The second task I can't really recall, but I'm pretty sure it was to read a text and write an essay on it. Mr. Reed likes it when you incorporate yourself and your past experiences and add anecdotes of your life into your essay. The last essay is based on a book we read called "To the Wedding". It was actually a really good book and I enjoyed it a lot. There were many aspects of it that were great. Anyway, the final assignment gives you a few options and you can decide which one to choose- one of them is a creative writing assignment so obviously I chose that. And it was easy to pick apart aspects of the fictional book to create my own work and Professor Reed seemed to really enjoy it and he was very encouraging. He helped as much as he could- however, I would like to say that if you're bascically hopeless at writing essays, he can only do so much. I know for myself I wasn't a great essay writer so he would kind of just skim my essays because he knew they weren't that great. So I got a C + on the first one, a B on the second one and an A+ on the last on and ended up with an A- in the class. Mr. Reed just wants to see you improve and remember that one bad score on an essay isn't going to tear you apart. You got into UCLA for a reason so even an A- isn't a terrible grade compared to how much worse I could've done if my last essay hadn't been good. It's all a work in progress and a matter of effort. Additionally, Mr. Reed makes students feel appreciated for their work. I really enjoyed his class and having him as a professor! Really made a terrible freshman year of college a little bit brighter! Thanks Mr. Wilson! Probably one of the best English teachers I've ever had.

Professor Wilson is great. He provides honest feedback, but makes you work very hard. I had to revise a couple essays to get an A in this class, but it forced me to really analyze the texts and write genuine pieces. However, he focuses on Jon Berger's works which are very tough to understand and comprehend. Be ready to write a lot and have to revise your writings for a good grade. I did enjoy this class.

Professor Wilson's class is all centered on an art critic, John Berger. This class will involve readings and films on John Berger and for the most part, its very reasonable. The readings are fairly easy to do, about 20 pages and he gives you deadlines way ahead of time. Professor Wilson is a really caring and nice man. He has office hours and conferences for each paper for you to get feedback and help on your writing. He supports each of his students and tries to accommodate towards your needs. There are 3 papers due for this class and a final portfolio which consists of the final drafts of these papers. Don't be discouraged if you don't do well on the first drafts of your essays because he has many opportunities for you to up your grade or bring it up. The class is based around one man, John Berger. The readings come from various pieces written by John Berger who, to me, is one of the most boring, yet challenging, authors I have ever read. The readings are bearable, even for me, someone who has no interest in art history whatsoever. There are 3 essays for the class and they are all based off of the readings in some way. If you don't understand the reading, you're kind of f***** since the essays require you to expand and develop strong arguments for whatever the prompt is. Professor Wilson encourages visiting his office hours for help and even sets up appointments to look over rough drafts. None of this helps! Towards the end of the quarter I realized that Professor Wilson doesn't help because "I can't go into your body and tell you what to write". He makes marks all over your essays but doesn't tell you how to change these things to improve your essay. I understand his point of view, he wants us to develop our own thoughts, but it hurts us in the end because he is the one grading us! It's hard to understand what direction to take your essay in if you have no idea what he's looking for. Oftentimes, I found that he really liked my drafts but when it was time for the final draft, either because he forgot he liked them or changed his mind, he just sh**s on my essays. The subjective nature of the English subject probably plays a role in this as well. Good thing we have so many chances to make up our grade, he isn't a harsh grader. Overall, this class was fairly easy. It was really boring mostly, but with lots of help from the Undergraduate Writing Center or a similar place, you should be fine. Be active in class. Do the rough drafts even if they aren't great. He is probably one of the better English teachers at UCLA.

The theme of the class was art history, which I have no interest in, but I still very much enjoyed the class. Professor Wilson is passionate about teaching and cares about his students.

Throughout the quarter you write several drafts of a couple of medium length papers and meet with class mates and Wilson in scheduled appointments. Very reasonable work load. Your grade is really based on improvement, and the grading is not harsh.

We read a couple of books, one of which was a social commentary on art and the other was a novel. They were ok.

The class size is very small, and Professor Wilson encourages group discussion.

Class starts with an entry in a response journal usually related to the assigned reading. You turn these in periodically, and if you do them you get full credit.

Highly recommend this professor.
