omg, what is wrong with her. I mean she is nice, but she brags too much about how little she makes, which is allot compared to some families that have a dual income of her "poor amount". Don't buy the book for soc 20, don't even bother it's a 100+ book that you won't ever need since she just takes the final and midterm from her slides. Regurgitate everything she says and she'll love you. I recommend that you take it with someone else if you're looking for a better way to learn and not end up frustrated at the end of the quarter like so many other students.
She is by far the worse professor I've ever taken in UCLA. Her presentations were organized but her midterms/final/homework assignments were so confusing and unfair! She never gave out any study guides, which got everyone really upset because there was so much to read... and yet we had no direction or any idea of what we were going to be tested on. 85% of what I read for the midterms weren't even on the midterm! I wasted so much time to study for that class and it wasn't even worth it.. I could've used that time to study for my other midterms/finals. It was such a frustrating class for me.
Okay, so maybe she is a fun and energetic professor, but she has got to be the worst professor when it comes to caring about her students. She is the most laziest professor I have ever had. She does not care about her students doing well and she is very unorganized. Her test are not explained well and if you interpret it in your on way she will take off points when it really was not your fault because of the way the test is written. She did not even want to have a final review for the final. If the TA's hadn't done it then we would have been screwed. I don't know why she is so hardcore. You don't ever have to have the attitude that you love your making your sudents work extra hard. We have other classes, lives, and work as well. She is too much. DO NOT TAKE HER!!! You will regret it, if you do.
All the postings down there are lyin ass muthers... I can't believe it has the audacity to say she is CARING. she is extremely boring and unfair! She literaly made all 40% of her students fail for the midterm. The lectures do not match the midterms and Her test questions are written extremely badly, very vague, and open to interpretation... so she'll mark all of the students wrong even though we all thought the same thing!
She is a harsh grader and doesn't believe in her students not one bit. She'll mark you down a whole grade letter for getting only one PUNCTUATION off. She is literally the worst professor I've ever had.
She has no faith in her students either. When a student does good, she really thinks they cheat.
Do not ever, ever, ever take this course. I am saving you now. Thank me later
Davis is such a mom. and she teaches like one. really laid back and very helpful. She's moderately funny so lectures arent too bad to sit through. They're podcasted, but i would recommend going. Assignments in this class are very easy, but you just have to pay attention and to the instruction. The whole class is based on a quarter long research project. Its really easy, step by step walked through with you. Just do what they're looking for and its a fairly easy A
Basic materials. Clear lectures. Really easy assignments although she can be kinda vague over the requirements. I find the class really relaxing, it was the only class that I wasn't worried about the results. Not very accessible outside the classrooms.
Go to your TAs for clarification. I cannot stress this enough, her requirements is really confusing and she can give contradictory statements. CLARIFY WITH THE TAs!!!
She will constantly tell you how college educated her family is and she shows off alot. She is a total failure. and alot depends on your TAs which for us is Xiong, Yang S and anthony alvarez which both are terrible. I don't know how they sleep at night not feeling guilty. I do NOT recomended at all.
i love Professor Davis. Readers, don't be intimidated by the previous comments! I have never commented before on BruinWalk prof ratings, but I wanted to do so for this course. I came into the class, not knowing at all what to expect. She was very lenient from the first day, and reassured the students that she'll try her best to improve upon her mistakes. I haven't met a lot of professors who openly say that to a class. As long as you do your assignments, read the book (or at least understand the main points) and not sleep all throughout the lecture, you should be A-OK. seriously. I have no regrets at all taking this course with her, and will take another course with her should the opportunity arises.
One more thing: just don't walk out in the middle of class, because I'd say that's her biggest pet peeve. If you have to, sit in the back and make a quick, quiet escape, haha.
She's a lovely lady. Go Professor Davis!
Professor Davis is nothing but totally sweet. She genuinely cares about being fair and would give extra points on homeworks or midterms, almost to the point where I thought she was being too lenient. Assignments seemed mostly straightforward (playing with SPSS was a lot of fun) and the midterm and final were extremely doable. If you read the chapters from the book and go to lecture, this class should be a slam dunk. Davis is awesome.
I dont know why anyone would give Prof. Davis a bad rating. She's a great instructor who understands how any sociologist should learn about research methods, through practical application of concepts learned. You should know going into the class that you will actually be developing and conducting an experiment of your own and writing a research paper on it. But this will be shared between 5 other people in your group, and you basically write the paper in 3 increments in the form of other homework assignments, so it's not like you're being jackhammered with a 20 page paper at the end of the quarter. I came into this course straight out of high school and only having taken Soc 101 at a junior college, so while I thought I would struggle immensely with the material, I wound up enjoying the course and doing pretty damn well. I highly recommend it.
