Very bad professor. Grading completely unfair, claims she “hates giving prompts” but hates any prompt you come up with. Gives out assignments that ask the impossible and tells us to do things she’s never taught us - and if you don’t do it right - you’ll fail the assignment. She even explained an assignment wrong, admitted that she was at fault, and then after WE ALL DID IT “WRONG," she made us redo it the last week of class. Essentially, instead of taking responsibility for essentially setting us up for failure, she assigned more work. Daily readings were far too dense to be met with absolutely no explanation. Class has no structure and I can confidently say that I learned nothing. Also she said this course was her “brain child” and that it was crafted to communicate that poetry of the Americas is more than American poetry, but most of what we read was poetry from the United States. Did not broaden my perspective, just made me realize I should never take a class from her again.
Professor Foote was a great professor, really understanding and knowledgeable in what she was teaching. As a grader, she is stricter but relaxes a lot on the final project. Participation is important, and she does not allow you to be absent for more than 3 classes, or she takes off participation points. There is also a 48-hour grace period for every assignment in the course, which is extremely helpful. Overall, her class was great to take; the course readings are all poems, and there was one poem assignment (SSR), an essay midterm, and a final project (could be research or creative). She is one of the newer English professors, so check out the class for yourself. It was a great experience.
Professor Foote does not lecture or prepare ahead of time for class meetings. Most of the class time was spent on student presentations and general discussions that no one really feels confident enough to participate in. Grading is unreasonably harsh and not based on any legitimate rubric as far as I can tell. Assignment instructions are very unclear and the professor always has contradictory expectations regarding submission guidelines. I had hoped for more instruction and clarity on the class content, but the set up of this course felt disorganized and lazy. Avoid this professor if you can.
Prof. Foote is by far the best professor i've ever had. She was fantastic, engaging, and extremely compassionate. I would take her classes again in a heartbeat. Highly recommend this course as well but in all honesty I feel any course with her would be amazing.
