Professor Rojas prepares very good slides and delivers lectures in an easy-to-follow way. I like how he uses markers of different colors for lecture notes. Econ 106V is not hard, but actually fun and beneficial, if you take this class with Professor Rojas! Highly recommended!! :) P.S. Attending lectures is very important as he will walk you through the slides and concepts.
My biggest pet peeve was that he didn't return the midterms thus you never really learned from your mistakes; making studying for the final more challenging. Not very good at replying to email. Overall, a very low demand and boring class. I would took take it again just because of how low the demand is. Rojas is a lecturer not a teacher.
The class itself is extremely boring. He reads off the lectures and drives everyone asleep in 20 minutes. Only by telling little anecdotes about himself he is able to draw the attention of the crowd.
The class also demands students to purchase an account from McGraw-Hill, which costs about $100. It is mandatory, as you need to do the homework online. The homework is not like the exams at all and people struggle for filling out the right numbers instead of really applying the formula.
The exams are fair but you don’t really have a lot of similar problems to practice. If you want to self-study then this is probably a choice. But if you want you tuition to bring you a good experience, don’t take him.
Rojas is a nice guy, but struggles to keep the attention of his students. In all honesty, his lectures are incredibly boring. If you read the text book and do the homework, you don't really even need to attend. The two midterms were very easy, but the final was a little bit trickier. Midterms are 25 Questions, Multiple Choice - Final is 70 Questions, Multiple Choice. He's very generous with his curve, and will not use it unless it helps your grade. He seems eager to explain concepts to those who are confused, he just doesn't do it all that well. The last 3 chapters before the final were significantly more complex than earlier chapters, and he spent far less time on them since we were running out of time at the end of the quarter. With that being said, he's not the best at pacing the course either. He's a fine professor, and I can definitely say you'll survive his class, it's just a little painful to sit through. He also requires you read the textbook in detail (HW on MindTap with very specific questions every week), so make sure you're up for that, as well. Though, it did me a lot of favors to read the book and practice the concepts that closely, as well.
I really like Professor Rojas! He pretty much just sticks to the slides for lecture, so I see how others find him boring. But, he asks questions and tries to engage the class that way, which is more than a lot of my professors here have done. He generally has an upbeat attitude and, if nothing else, his lectures are clear and easy to follow. He doesn't bring a lot of personality into lecture, I guess, but he's pleasant and a good teacher, and it's not really his job to entertain us. Midterms are more or less the same as the homework online, so I felt very prepared.
This was a solid class. Everything covered in lecture is on the slides, which is great in case you have to miss class. It's definitely not essential to go, but could be worth it if you don't want to take the time to study the slides on your own later. I took Econ 1 over summer and was able to call MindTap and get them to extend my account to cover fall quarter for Econ 2 too which saved me a lot of money, as the textbook/MindTap are expensive. Textbook is really useful for studying. Midterm 2 was harder than Midterm 1, but I did well on both by studying the textbook. Haven't taken the final yet but heard it's harder than both midterms. Expecting to do fine in the class, especially because Rojas emailed us over Thanksgiving break and said that he'd drop the lowest homework score -- there's weekly HW quizzes due on Friday that are easy to forget if you don't plan ahead. Overall, I liked this class and would recommend it as being very manageable.
Overall a good professor. He is a really nice guy with pretty clear lectures. Although he can be a bit boring at times, he gets through the material with a lot of clarity and always asks students to ask him questions before he moves on to the next section. The midterms and final were all multiple choice. As long as you do relatively well on the homework, the tests should be fine. The tests are heavily tailored towards the homework; in fact, the first midterm practically had questions copied and pasted from the homework. The weekly homework was pretty doable, as you had two tries. Discussions were useless; my TA was really boring and very unhelpful. If you don't want to go to discussion, then don't, you won't miss much. I will say that if you took AP Macroeconomics in high school and you need to take this class, you definitely have an advantage over others as a lot of the material overlaps. This is a good class with a good teacher.
Course Breakdown:
Weekly homework quizzes (15%)
Midterms (20% each)
Final (45%)
Mr. Rojas is a clear and quick-to-the-point professor. It is obvious that he cares about his students and consistently interacts with them even though they don't show much enthusiasm or willingness to participate.
I took Microeconomics for a semester my senior year of high school, so I didn't learn any new material. Still, I got a comprehensive understanding of the material and had some concepts "click" for the first time! The weekly online homework is not difficult and the two midterms and final are fair.
Warning: His class is held in a large lecture room with dim lights, comfy chairs, and AC, so it can be hard to stay awake in that class, especially after just eating breakfast!
