Dr. Fallows is easily one of the best professors I've ever had at UCLA. As a pre-med, I get it how tough classes can be here. However, coming to this class I felt my brain at ease relaxed looking forward to this class in a sense. Dr. Fallows is the most laidback professor I've ever had and can't recommend him enough. He even grades your essays beforehand and will allow you to re-submit up until week 10 until you receive the grade you want. No other English professor does that! Can't say enough about this guy, the most phenomenal and understanding human being to ever exist !
Randy was one of the best professors I have taken at UCLA. He teaches you how to write essays completely different than what you have learned previously. Although it sounds intimidating he shows you each step you should be taking. He also has a group project where you discuss your future career goals and how climate change may impact that. He is not a harsh grader as long as you listen to his directions in class. He also co-teaches with Christensen; they have the same exact assignments. The only difference is who grades them and decides if you're on contract or not (he just says if you passed the essay, doesn't really tell you you got an A).
Randy is an excellent professor who really cares about his students. He allows you to use a very free writing technique in your paper which really allowed you to write to the best of your ability. On the syllabus, he really breaks down what you need to get your desired grade in the class. As long as you keep up with the papers and not wait till the day before, you should be good. Like the other review mentioned, his class fills up really fast so I would watch for that but if you can take him I definitely would!
Wow. Took this class online during corona, but still favorite class I have ever taken. I literally was excited when writing my essays (especially the Grammar B). Randy is the sweetest human, and his way of life will really make you think about yours. Only two essays the entire quarter, and two mini group projects, but this class really lets you get creative and investigate careers and climate issues you care about. Amazing amazing amazing
Randy is an amazing teacher. He runs his class like a graduate student seminar which is refreshing. You can think of it as a giant participatory discussion section as opposed to a traditional lecture presentation. He is funny and lectures fly by. In terms of "homework" there really isn't much your paper grades make up 80% of your overall grade so put lots of time and effort into them and don't leave them to the last minute and you will do exceptionally well. Also, his class will teach you how to write and feel comfortable supporting your own opinions in a more natural personal way. The two essays you write are Traditional format and Grammar B format. The Grammar B essay looks difficult at first but I found it to be the more fun one in the end. He makes you write it from the perspective of your desired profession 5, 10, 15 years down the road and you get to use many different styles (Emails, Linkedin profiles, Diary entries, Eye Charts, etc.). Overall this CLASS is VERY FAIR. You get out of it what you put in. If you slack and procrastinate on your essays and you don't participate in class you won't do well in this class. But if you are diligent and stay on top of the course load and participate and come prepared to class you will do just fine! Randy is very open to meeting with students as many times as they need and he will give you comments and suggestions to improve your paper if it is not already an A paper. Go for it! Sign up for this amazing class! (If you can get in that is since its only 22 people per class)
Randy is my favorite professor that I have had so far at UCLA! The lectures were super fun and weren't ever boring to go to. The required reading and work for the class was very reasonable and there wasn't any "busy work" given by the professor. Overall, I think he does as much as he can to help his students write and succeed during their time here. I would take every course with him if I had the chance!
