Winter 2019 - Originally, as an international student, I am extremely afraid of writing. However, after this class, I love writing so much! He makes the class very interesting by introducing you interesting questions. There are three required essays, which are Black Mirror episode analysis, documentary analysis and Grammar B, which I like the most. He wrote his own book Own Your Perspectives and taught us how to incorporate our own perspectives into writing. And Grammar B is a truly free space for you to express your creativity. He always encourages students to write and to think. He likes to share his own lifestyle in class, which makes this class more interactive, and those life stories are also funny. The workload is doable. It is not that easy because you still need to revise again and again to improve your score. But he provides the one-on-one session as well as class publication in order to let you revise your essay from multiple angles. Go to the office hour earlier and begin revising earlier! He really opens up my mind and I would like to think more about the world around me!

I had Professor Fallows for College Summer Institute, a transition program for incoming freshmen, and at first, I didn't like his curriculum at all, but eventually I changed my mind completely because his essay assignments actually had me thinking. His first essay is a formal literary analysis essay, but it's not like the AP English style essay. This essay requires your personal input, which thus requires much critical thinking when you have transition analysis to your personal anecdotes and thoughts and back. His second essay was called a Grammar B essay. It's clash of art and writing because you have a chance to write an essay but in the most creative way possible on Microsoft Word. He even provides examples for the Grammar B essays in his course reader to give you an idea. The readings for the class consisted of plays, including the famous "Waiting for Godot." Since the plays were well selected, you should expect some interesting discussions in class. As for grade, it is based on two essays (three if it's during the regular school year) and participation. You can revise your essay over and over again until you get the grade you want since the final drafts are due on the last day of class. So, take advantage of that since he advised that there are no other professors like him who does that. English 5W should be the class for you if you want to fulfill the Writing II requirement and the Literary/Cultural Analysis GE requirement.

Spring 2024 - Dr. Fallows is easily one of the best professors I've ever had at UCLA. As a pre-med, I get it how tough classes can be here. However, coming to this class I felt my brain at ease relaxed looking forward to this class in a sense. Dr. Fallows is the most laidback professor I've ever had and can't recommend him enough. He even grades your essays beforehand and will allow you to re-submit up until week 10 until you receive the grade you want. No other English professor does that! Can't say enough about this guy, the most phenomenal and understanding human being to ever exist !
