Like all the other reviews say, this guy is the man. Lectures are interesting and midterms are easy. He is enthusiastic about the subject and he makes biology much more interesting. If you need an LS GE, look for Professor Robinson.
Regarding the course, half of the material is regurgitated high school biology. The concepts covered are very easy and he doesn't make you memorize the complex reactions (such as the Krebs cycle and Glycolysis). If you attend lecture and do the reading, it's hard not to get an A.
I didn\355t want to take microbiology (since I am not a real science person, history major), but I had to fulfill my life science requirements. After taking this class however, I find microbiology very interesting. Dr. Robinson makes microbiology fun and exciting. His lectures are very insightful and actually worth going to - you learn useful stuff. He\355s a very funny person and easy to approach. He grades extremely fairly and his exams aren\355t really that bad if you take time to study. Take this class if you have a life science requirement \361 easy GE class, great professor, and you learn cool facts.
Dr.Robinson is one of the best professors I've had so far. This class is very organized because everything you have to know is in the course reader and the reading assignments are very doable/compatible with the lectures. If you excelled in high school biology, this class should be an easy A.
Definitely one of the best professors around, certainly my favorite professor. Very clear and entertaining lectures, class is not very hard at all if you know what to study (online notes). Micro 12 is the most interesting classes offered at UCLA as well.
Coming in as a freshman, I had the best professor in the Fall quarter of 2003. Professor Robinson was one of the three. His lectures were filled with enthusiasm and he knew his material well. He made sure we understood the stuff and he also had lecture notes and powerpoint presentation available on the class webpage. I always fall asleep in his class even if I desperately try not to; this is because the class was late, not because he's boring. He is not boring at all; he makes jokes and makes class fun and worth coming to. His class is not hard, but you have to read a lot and memorize a lot. You cannot fall behind, and if you do you will have a lot to memorize for final. There is no room for mistake in this class. Final is worth 60% and midterm is worth 40% and that is it. No participation, homework, and quizzes. Two test determines it all. This may sound scary, but if you study the material well, it is not that bad (need to memorize a lot of info). I pulled through, and I am sure many of you guys are capable of doing so too. Make sure you memorize the webnotes well. If you get an 85% overall grade, you will get an A, but what kind of A will be determined by a curve. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! GREAT PROFESSOR!!!
Great professor, interesting topics.
The tests are very straight-forward and mostly multiple choice. So few questions on the tests are from the book that there's really no point to reading the text, so very very very little study time outside of class is required for this course. Just memorize the online notes and lecture notes for the test and you should do very well (the entire grade is based on 2 tests). This class is easy in the sense that it's just rote memorization.
If you have never taken any life science classes before, YOU MUST TAKE HIS MICRO 6 CLASS. Full of valuable information. Attend every one of the lectures, even though he gives web notes but it can not be substituted for the lecture notes. Don't leave UCLA before you take a class with him.
I ended up with a C in this class, so don't think that this class is easy! (But if you really love science--and I don't--maybe you'll find it simple.)
Robinson was an absolutely hilarious professor as well as very intelligent and friendly! I didn't care much for the topic of microbiology itself, but Robinson made it fun. Going to lectures was always something to look forward to. I love his stuffed animals, too.
This class may be a little difficult as a life science GE, but I highly recommend it to those who are genuinely interested in learning about bacteria, viruses, etc.
If you have not taken any biology or life sciences you MUST TAKE his Micro 6. Very intersting and useful in life. He realy tries to teach something useful in life. Good manner and fun. Even there was lots of reading, I enjoyed them all.
poor Grading policy: 40% midterm 60% final and nothing else, so be careful not to scrow up in the midterm. I thought I did realy good in the MIMG 6 midterm but I ended up with a B- but at the end after final he curved the grades and I ended with an A.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Professor Robinson in an awesome professor. You have to take one of his classes! It's the perfect GE- not only is it informative and interesting, Robinson is a GREAT lecturer, it's a pretty easy class! You don't have to go to lecture or even read the book. I did because Robinson is so awesome, though. He's fun and will surprise you; you'll do fun experiments and he'll demo things for you.
Totally take advantage of Robinson. What he talks about is extremely practical to real and daily life. Just read over his webnotes and know them really well; that's all his lectures and midterm and final are all about. TAKE HIM he's really really really good!
