HIST M110B with Shayegan was an interesting experience. Although I have never come into contact with any Iranian history or have any knowledge on the Arsacid empire, Shayegan made what was such a foreign topic to me engaging and interesting. There were a lot of names and dates to remember, but if you go to class and take good notes, you will be fine on the tests. Tests are very straightforward and he usually sends study guides beforehand. Don't fall asleep in class though, he will call you out.
If you like the material he presents in the first week and you can deal with his accent, then this class will be enjoyed and a breeze for you, however, if you can't seem to grasp the material or what he says, I would not recommend this class in that case. 1 midterm, 1 final, 10% attendance. If you don't keep up with every detail presented in the lectures, you will not do well when its exam week, a couple days of preparing is not sufficient for the exams
Dr. Shayegan is incredible. He gives weekly assigned readings but goes over everything in class, so you can get away without doing the actual readings. But attendance is mandatory! His lectures are interesting and he is very clear. He does not provide study guides for the midterm and final but he goes over everything in DETAIL on what the exams will cover. If you attend class and take good notes, there is no excuse for you to not get an A. He's quite funny also! Highly recommended! And no papers either.
