The most recent evaluations seem to be the most accurate. Ignore the old ones.
Honestly, this class does make you work. You're in college now, get over it. But, Dr. Fretz sets up the class in a manner that helps you succeed. You have three essays in the class, and each has specific due dates for outlines and drafts. You really can't get behind because of this, which I thought was really helpful. And even if you don't do your best on one of the first two essays, it won't hurt your grade really because you have the option of those not really counting.
Overall, I thought the topic of the course, writing about love and culture, to be very interesting. She is very open to all cultures and very knowledgeable on ethnography. Listen to her, she has an interesting life story.
Expect to have to schedule conferences out of class time. These are actually like the best though so you can do better in the class. She asks a lot about your opinion of the class during this time as well.
The workload is totally doable because she knows when other classes are busy, so you'll have more work for this class when you have less work for others.
Honestly, I was scared to take this class but came out knowing a lot and being very successful in it. Dr. Fretz wants everyone to get As and Bs. She even gives you a pizza party at the end of the quarter.
Take a risk and take the course. You might learn something. But yes, be ready to take criticism and put in the effort for the grade. If you're lazy though, find a different eng comp 3 class.
Okay, so I took Dr. Fretz despite all the negative comments on here. Yes, she does make you write multiple drafts on essays; but last time I checked it's a process called LEARNING. From every essay I wrote and edited I learned to analyze and make things thorough. Not only this, but the essay topics are really easy. You don't have to go out of your way or anything. She does love journaling, but she never checks your journal. Take it like a diary. At the end of the quarter she just asks how many pages you accomplished to write. Compared to other people taking English 3, I would say this course is fairly easy. Also, Dr. Fretz is very available. It is kind of scary at first to approach her, but if you do and you get to know her, she is very nice and willing to help! So, it is up to you. You choose what you think.
Yes, she does give you a lot of busy work, but it really ISN'T as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Busy work doesn't have to be a bad thing. It helps to raise your grade, so I wouldn't complain.
I didn't hear any 'racist' remarks from her, so I have no clue what everyone else it talking about. She is a nice lady concerned with learning, that's all there is to it really. She can be a bit boring, but face it, we all pretty much have to take English comp 3, so may as well just get it over with.
It's really not as much work as people say it is. I got an A, and I felt like I didn't go above and beyond on any of my work.
After reading these horrible reviews on Bruinwalk, I pretty much dreaded my first day of class with Dr. Fretz. And guess what?
She isn't bad AT ALL.
Granted, she does make a couple of insensitive, some might say "racist," remarks here and there, but overall, she really does try hard to give her students the best grade possible.
She doesn't grade the essays with a cut-throat rubric or anything, and I got A's or A-'s in every essay, even if I did do them the night before. She's really not that bad.
Fretz makes you do these reading logs and everyday journals that can get a bit annoying and time-consuming, but they're not graded, so it's no big deal. If you do the reading logs, you get a "plus." No? You get a "zero." Pretty simple. You don't have to put in too much time and effort in these logs. The journals are a joke. She requires you to write about three pages a day, which can get time-consuming, but she allows you to "free draw." Basically, draw "whatever comes to mind." So those journals aren't difficult. Just write or draw whatever comes to mind.
Fretz has this end-of-the-term final ethnographic research paper. Honestly, the topic is a bit corny... and unnecessary. But it's also another easy A. You get to do it with a partner. Yes, it's 15+ pages long, but she gives you a lot of time to do it and you have a partner. And she doesn't grade it to harshly.
One of my only complaints is that she has students waste a TON of paper doing drafts and such. Too many drafts.
Overall, don't be scared of her because of these reviews. She's not that bad at all. Just do all the work and you're already halfway there to an A. Do the essays, but don't stress out about them too much since she's not a tough grader.
SHE NOT THAT BAD!!!!
Its like any other college class, you cant expect to get away with doing nothing. If you show up to class, GO TO office hours, and write the papers exactly the way she wants it, you'll be fine. I actually had her this quarter and although its was time consuming its very do able, and everyone has a chance of getting an A.
Terrible, Terrible!! she makes racists remarks too...I took her my first quarter of freshman year and she ruined English for me. She had us waste tons of paper!! and everything always had to be revised like 20 million times! It's never good enough. Her work is not difficult just so time consuming. I did not like this class at all! She made it hell. She was ok but man so much work. Did she think we only had her class and not others?
I would not recommend her to anybody but if you do find yourself in her class, good luck! You'll manage just like I did as well as everyone else on here. I got a B in the end but blah I did not enjoy her class at all. As a freshman especially, it sucked! Was not used to college yet and wow some proffesor I got. Well at least I passed and that's done with.
I would not advise someone to take this class. No matter how hard you work or how many times you edit your essay there will always be something wrong with it that will prevent you from getting an A. I guess the worst part is that she wants you to think and analyze everything you read a certain way. She also wants the essays to be written in a format that she will give and if for some reason you do not follow the format your essay will suffer. I worked really hard for her class and I ended up doing ok. But I felt like I deserved an A.
Don't take the course.
I was one of the many who, upon seeing the negative reviews upon Bruinwalk, thought that I could simply persevere through all of Fretz's issues. It's not worth it, really.
I had less of an issue with the readings and logbooks, but upon getting an essay back and having only two minor mechanical errors merit a B-, no. The class becomes 'hard' because she micromanages the crap out of everything from how we partner up to how we interpret the texts we read which, by the way, are her own, so she's extremely biased. She makes the class frustrating beyond belief.
Don't take the class. Within the first week or so you'll realize why, if not earlier. This was your warning, after all.
Haha, and I'm fucking done, by the way. YES!!!
