Fernandez is a pretty good professor for 31B. He gave weekly homeworks which weren't too long, but his lectures are really hard to listen to. I would say that they were the only bad thing about the class; je kind of rambles on and it was really hard to pay attention during the lectures. I basically learned from ALOT of outside help and from the book, not so much from him. However, I would say that his tests weren't too bad(if you know how to study and don't make stupid mistakes). I made stupid mistakes for the exams and ended up getting a little above the average for the two midterms, but studied my ass off for the final, and did pretty well. I did really well on the homeworks, mnd managed to get an A. He seems to really care about his students, and everyone else who has had him really likes him. Overall, I would say that Fernandez is a pretty good professor and I would recommend taking him if you're ok with learning and studying out of the book.
Fernandez was a great professor. He did a good job (most of the time) of explaining things in lectures, but when he didn't he would try to explain it again or once he even gave us handouts to help us understand. He's very caring and wants us to learn and do well. I remember once he even extended his office hours by about 3 hours just so a few of us who couldn't make his regular office hours could pick up our homework! The exams were fairly straightforward so you usually know what's going to be on there, although there were a few tricky problems on the second midterm and final. I think he grades pretty fairly. Also he has two grading schemes (I think this is true for most math classes though) where you can basically drop a midterm if you do poorly, but then your final counts for more. This probably helped me out since I did well on the first one and not so well on the second one and then decently on the final.
Take his class if you can, but you won't get a cheat sheet or notecard on any of the exams so be prepared for that. Also he has a British accent which was nice for me since I'm also from the UK and I'm sure most other people liked that too, but that also means sometimes he pronounces things slightly differently and uses different words (I could often hear people around me whispering "what did he say?").
Fernandez is a great professor. He is extremely caring and it's obvious he only wants his students to excel in his class. He makes his test very straight-forward and if you go to his lectures you'll probably get an idea as to what will be on the actual exams, though, they aren't exactly necessary if you feel comfortable with the material. Sometimes he was a bit hard to understand in lecture because he wasn't sure what he was doing with a problem at times, and would mumble to himself, but he DOES know his material. His office hours are extremely helpful and he is very friendly so do not feel intimidated to ask questions! Overall, Fernandez is an awesome professor; take him if you can!
Alright so professor Fernandez is probably the nicest, sweetest and the most caring professor. He really will help you out with whatever question or concern you may have. Even if he needs to stay a few extra hours in his office. Plus he is very goofy too =). His tests are pretty fair, not super hard. And he gives you options when calculating your final grade (either count one midterm out of the two and have the final be a bigger percentage of your grade, or if you did good on both of the midterms, you could just count both and have the final be only 40%, otherwise it wouldve been 60%) The problem is i don't like the way he explains the material, he can't explain it very clearly, most of the time i would not even go to lecture because i just had to teach myself eventually, so i didn't waste my time. He cares though, during lectures if you ask him a question he will explain he won't ignore you at all. hes also very encouraging!! if i had to give his class a rating on a scale of 1-10 i would give it a 9, his teaching skills probably a 7. He isn't bad at all, he's not a nightmare like some professors really could be. Basically don't run away from the guy.
