Taking a class with Prof. Fernandez is like having an Indian version of James Bond as a math professor. It's freaking awesome! He's so cute, and he really cares about his students learning the material in a deep way. His tests and grading are totally fair because Fernandez is a super cool dude. The best part is that he always looks like he walked right out of a fashion magazine - he came to lecture one day in a sparkly gold and blue stripped blazer! The glare kept hurting my eyes, but whatever. Thanks to Professor Fernandez's class, when I told my friend I could beat him at arm wrestling and he said "Prove it," I honestly replied, "I'll prove it - prove it like Pythagoras' Theorem!"

Alright so professor Fernandez is probably the nicest, sweetest and the most caring professor. He really will help you out with whatever question or concern you may have. Even if he needs to stay a few extra hours in his office. Plus he is very goofy too =). His tests are pretty fair, not super hard. And he gives you options when calculating your final grade (either count one midterm out of the two and have the final be a bigger percentage of your grade, or if you did good on both of the midterms, you could just count both and have the final be only 40%, otherwise it wouldve been 60%) The problem is i don't like the way he explains the material, he can't explain it very clearly, most of the time i would not even go to lecture because i just had to teach myself eventually, so i didn't waste my time. He cares though, during lectures if you ask him a question he will explain he won't ignore you at all. hes also very encouraging!! if i had to give his class a rating on a scale of 1-10 i would give it a 9, his teaching skills probably a 7. He isn't bad at all, he's not a nightmare like some professors really could be. Basically don't run away from the guy.

Professor Fernandez rules! He's definitely one of the better professors in the math department, and since I heard he might not be teaching at UCLA much longer, it would be a REAL treat if you could take him for any math course. Be prepared to take a lot of notes as Fernandez writes A LOT during class. His handwriting, however, can be sloppy at times, so it can be kind of difficult to make out what he is writing. Nevertheless, he's generally clear when he's delivering the material. One of the reasons why Math 132 wasn't terribly bad was because Fernandez used a different textbook for the class, and from what I have heard, this different textbook is better than the actual textbook for other 132 classes. While the book may not be clear at times at presenting concepts, their examples are generally understandable to the point where you can pretty much do the homework without even reading the introductory parts of each section. His midterm was a little trippy, but it really wasn't too bad as long as you study the homework assignments and the different formulas in the textbook. The final was pretty grueling, but not terribly hard. I would HIGHLY recommend going to his Office Hours because he can help you a lot on the homework. He taught two classes when I had him for 132, so his office got pretty crowded, but other than that it's not too bad. Plus, when I was the only student who showed up at the beginning of his Office Hours, he even bought me some tea and taught me how to make it! The TA was pretty cool too, although I kind of wish he covered more about the homework, but his office hours help too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
