This class was very engaging especially when you make friends that are also in the class. It amazed me all the topics I missed in high school pre-cal that placed me into this course. My favorite part of the class was the free online textbook. My least favorite part was ALEKS which was so annoying because you had to get to a certain level of correctness and if you miss the third question out of /3 then you would need to do 2 more to complete the level which was time consuming not to mention the times you would exhaust your tries and have to wait to try it again. My TA was terrible because he was going over short hand math that was not related to lectures and he wouldn't do review sessions but Pietro couldn't do anything. Pietro was very helpful during office hours and had extended his hours during finals week which was so thoughtful and helpful because what we covered then was what was on the final. If there is one thing I recommend, it is to go to his office hours. You will learn in depth the topics from lecture and he will help you with the homework by guiding you in the thought process. Plus you make new friends in that class that are just as bright as you. It did sorta suck that he wouldn't do review sessions he lecture before a midterm but at least you weren't learning new material the class before. His grading scheme was very helpful in that they chose the scheme benefitting you instead of making you choose. I also liked that we were able to see all of our grades on myucla and not guess our final grades. He also graded midterms fast so you were able to see your grade within a day or so (sometimes by the end of the day). Pietro is very approachable don't be afraid to ask him questions during lecture or at any other time.
The online component to the class was a hassle and so time consuming. Damn ALEKS, it was so much work and it wasn't even worth much of our grade. I know it's out of his ability, but the curve for the class sucked and the distribution of grades did too, thus so many people received C's. My TA sucked and did not even know what was going on half the time. And they awfully made so many mistakes on grading midterms , He did not make lecture engaging and entertaining, lecture was pointless because he was not able to teach simple concepts. He would go off tangent and would make easy material very difficult. Once, instead of having a review during lecture in preparation for an exam he decided to give us a useless lecture about the math of tinder. Don't get me started with his office hours, he is no help and instead makes you feel stupid. His exams were also very difficult in comparison to his lectures. Try to avoid taking him if given the opportunity. Maybe he just wasn't the right professor for my preference of teaching style and is the reason for the bad grade I received , but there are better professors out there!!!
He seems like a good teacher, but the amount of work was crazy and the rate at which we moved through concepts was too much. He does genuinely care but it was difficult to take this class in a hall with 300+ other students.
