The two essays were completely driven by the TA's, but the averages for both essays were around an A- (if i recall correctly) and the TAs were pretty generous with their grading as long as you showed effort and good research. The midterm and final were open book so pretty easy as long as you checked your answers.

All engineering ethics classes aren't great, so I thought a CS one might be a little more interesting. It wasn't. There are some interesting discussions brought up but the class is a lot more about just asking random questions with no answers than actually debating any issues or anything. The essays allow you to argue some points, but they are just kinda tedious. The first essay is on a debate of your choice where you have to argue solutions to an ethical problem. I wrote mine on Algorithmic Bias. Second essay you have to pick from a couple of tragedies and use an ethical framework to say where they went wrong. This second essay is just annoying, theres no way to say anything interesting about the ethical frameworks. Lectures are skippable (he reads the slides with no commentary and then doesn't even answer questions) but discussions are required.

The midterm was trash, 20 questions where the some questions were detestably ambiguous. When talking to the professor about these questions he just stood his ground. Its frustrating because there was no room for error, especially when the lectures didn't actually teach me anything, so I had to just guess what the professor wanted from a lot of these questions.

The grading in this class is ridiculous, I got a raw 93 and got an A-. He said he doesn't curve the class, but he's lying to you. Because I missed 2.5 questions on the midterm, I failed to get an A after getting ~96 on every other assignment. For this reason I can't recommend this class to anyone looking for an easy A, which the rest of the ethics classes seem to be.

I would only reccomend this class if you really wanna write about technical topics like machine learning or something and don't care about your grades.

This quarter was the first time this version of ethics was offered. The lectures are very long and the nice part was that it was CS-oriented. Nevertheless, near middle to end of the quarter, only around 30 ppl attend lecture... I don't think attending lecture is necessary to pass the class since our exams were all open book.
Aside from the lecture, attending discussions were mandatory and your discussions experience will greatly depend on the TA. My TA never had a discussion that was over 1 hour long and often ended within 30 min.
Aside from one midterm and one final, we had to write two papers that were over 3000 words that took quite a bit of time. Aside from the essay, this course does not require much other effort unless you want to read the readings. The readings aren't necessary imo to do well on the tests since you can ctrl-f through them.
I felt like my TA was definitely not an easy grader, and there wasn't a large curve in the class which is why I decided to PNP this class.
