Honestly this class was great and my TA was pretty cool. I had Zackary and he was super understanding and dope. I had a few moments this quarter with personal issues and I was able to get extensions and he was super accommodating esp bc he didn’t need to.
He offered and often stayed later for office hours during midterms and finals and I really appreciated that because I needed the help. Would def recommend his section just make sure you communicate with him that you need accommodations.
The professor is cool and overall the midterm and final are easy and straightforward. You’ll be ok if you just make sure to review and look at the lecture slides tbh
Overall I found this class really dry even though I went into it expecting it to be interesting. I didn't do any of the readings past like the first one because Prof Tulipana basically summarizes them in depth in his lectures. The grade was just 3 very easy 1-page (double-spaced) open-ended papers, a take-home midterm and final (both 5 questions that you need 2-3 paragraphs in response for each), and discussion section attendance. A very easy and low-effort class, but just quite boring in the way he lectures
Prof Tulipana rambles quite a bit, but the topics can get quite interesting sometimes. There's a take home midterm and final, around 6 questions including the extra credit option. Very TA dependent class though since they're grading your essay responses. Attend discussions. I would take again!
Do not take this class unless you have a good TA that grades easy, I had Zackary and he did not at all. I took this class thinking it would be a breeze since its a freshman GE class and also I have done very well in every other writing class I have ever taken. My TA graded the exams pretty harshly while the other TA's did not care at all (as you can see from the other reviews). The averages for the exams though were in the 90s, so I really do not understand why this TA graded as harshly as he did especially when other TAs were giving out 100s for any sort of writing even if it wasn't good.
Easy ahh class bc i got a goated TA, shoutout Sam. No mandatory lectures and barely any work for the class, just a few reading assignments and the midterm and final was an essay. Tbh idk what the Tulipana was talking about during all of the lectures bc he talks in jargon lol. Recommend the class though, its a good GE class.
This class is very interesting and engaging! The workload is very manageable- only three papers due throughout the quarter. There are a lot of readings. The TAs are great as well and definitely make the content more understandable.
Tulipana is a great lecturer who thoroughly explains the material of the course in understandable parts for students who have never taken a philosophy class, like myself. If I ever need to go back and remember anything from his lectures, Tulipana has his slides on BruinLearn and they helped me. The workload for this class is manageable if you enjoy reading and writing, although if you don't, this class might be more of a chore to get through. The coursework given is spread out enough to not feel overwhelmed and I could easily comprehend writing philosophical answers to biomedical questions. If you are thinking of pre-health in the future and want to practice ethics within the health industry, then you will get a lot out of it.
This was not enjoyable. It was rather easy, however.
The first half of the quarter was spent just discussing ethics. Think Kant, consequentialism, etc. It was quite dry. I also don't think he had any experience with bioethics specifically, so the connections between course concepts from the first half and medical/biological examples in the latter half were not super evident or helpful. I feel as though I left with decent ethics knowledge, but that's not why I took the class. The only time I really gleaned *bioethics* knowledge was in my discussion section.
There were two reflection papers and one midterm for this course. The midterm was quite long and took forever, but it was take-home and open book. We did not have a final due to the TA strike. (I don't know if UCLA technically allows this but Tulipana told us he couldn't think of a better alternative because he didn't want to personally grade a bunch of essay-based finals.)
