Great class, definitely harder than I expected. I loved the material (some of the movies were mediocre though) and Professor Wen is really cool. Make sure to know the content well, tests were basically all about content.
There was a lot of speculation about the class not being as easy now with the changed grading system and while that is somewhat true, I still thought it was a very manageable GE compared to most of the others. The only way to miss participation points (10% of grade) is by not being present when your name is called to answer questions, most people seemed to get around 95% on the paper (10% of grade), and both the midterms (40% each) were pretty easy, but as they are only 20 questions long, each question ends up heavily impacting your overall grade. The readings are pretty straightforward and he posts his slides which he draws directly from for midterm questions.
SELLING MATERIALS (all like new condition with no writing inside):
Course reader: $30
5 books (The Shadow & Other Tales + Hunger + Anecdotes of Destiny and Ehrengard + Naive Super + The Dwarf): $30

This class is a great time. It's basically an english class, but for Scandinavia. No textbook, homework assignments, discussion, or bullshit. First 2 weeks is the most workload as there's a paper to write, but you can participate in a mock trail and get out of the paper (limited space for the trial) and after this, the quarter is a breeze. Two midterms, second one is basically a "final" but it isn't cumulative. The class is pretty much him introducing authors and background information, then you read some stuff for hw and discuss in class. You don't really need to pay attention and can cram everything the night before the tests. You don't need to fully read every book and story assigned and watch every movie assigned, you can easily get by with reading summaries online and kinda listening to class discussions sometimes because the tests are very surface level, just to check if you have read. Participation is kinda mandatory as he calls random names during class and if you either aren't there or don't answer it, your grade drops 10%. If you answer it or never get called on, you get the full 10% of that part of your grade which is chill because the class is like 300 students and 20-30 got called on all quarter. Fully recommend taking this class with Wen, he genuinely cares more if you learn rather than caring about grades. Awesome guy. If you are a finesser, take this class. If you are a sweaty try hard who will actually read everything, have fun with a bunch of bullshit Scandinavian stories lol. Either way, easy A for sure and a good time. If you want the course reader for a cheaper price than the store, hmu at **********
This class has the reputation of being the easiest class in UCLA and I'm 99% sure that's true.
The readings are very easy and completely optional, the lectures are pretty entertaining but you can skip all of them without missing much, and the tests are extremely easy. There were two midterms, a final, and a small writing assignment.
Both midterms are 20 questions multiple choice about the readings, and the final is 30 questions multiple choice.
Easiest class ever, and the professor is so clearly interested in the topic it's pretty cute.
I found this class to be easy and interesting. Highly recommend for freshman to take fall quarter(because spots are held for y'all during orientation sessions)! I am selling the course reader for a discount please text me at **********
Easy GE, interesting texts. Some of the texts and movies were long, but they were interesting so it wasn't too bad. Show up to class! He randomly called on people for participation and asked questions about the readings. If your name gets called and you aren't there, you will get a zero in participation (worth 10%). I'm not sure how strict he actually was about this because my name never got called, but it seems like that could really screw you over. This class is pretty easy as long as you at least skim through the readings and review for the tests. Professor Wen is a great and funny professor. I felt bad for him because he had a lot of passion for Scand Lit and the class didn't always share the same enthusiasm.
I'm selling my course reader! I wish bruinwalk had a DM system but since it doesn't, you can email me at: *************
This class is known as the easiest GE, on campus, because it is. The class itself is boring and so are the lectures. There are a decent number of readings so there is some work. Professor Wen is a really nice guy and will accommodate any problems you have. There are two midterm, 20 multiple questions each. The midterms are surface level questions about the texts, so it takes less than 10 minutes, but there are a lot of texts so a lot to ask from. Great guy.
